What is checked at the border

  • A valid passport. Without a stamp setting a date, you can stay 6 months from entry, but not beyond the expiry of your passport or biometrics.
  • The border officer must believe you will leave at the end of your authorized stay; a job, home, assets or family back home help.
  • Enough money for the whole trip. There is no fixed amount: it depends on how long you stay and whether you stay in a hotel or with friends.
  • If you were invited, bring the invitation letter: the border officer may ask to see it.
  • An eTA is linked to the passport you applied with: travel on that passport, the airline checks it at check-in.

How to extend your stay

You can extend from inside Canada by applying for a visitor record, ideally at least 30 days before your status expires. Fee CAN$100 (≈$70); the new leave-by date is written on the document. You may stay legally while the application is pending.

Overstay penalties

Visitor status ends on the last day of your authorized stay. Within 90 days you can apply to restore it for CAN$246.25 (≈$173), with no guarantee. Otherwise you face removal: after an exclusion order you need written authorization (CAN$492.50, ≈$345) to return within a year.

How can I stay in Canada longer?
A visa-free stay does not give the right to live in the country. A longer stay needs a long-term visa or a residence permit: express Entry — permanent residence for skilled workers, provincial Nominee Program (PNP), work permit — employer-specific or open, study permit, sponsorship of a spouse, partner or child, super visa for parents and grandparents — up to 5 years per stay.
