Terms come from the services' own pages, checked on 7 September 2026. Insurers change plans and cover: read the policy terms on the seller's side before you pay.

Which policy you need

For a visa

Consulates ask for cover of at least €30,000 valid for every day of the trip. A basic plan does the job — paying extra for sports and premium assistance adds nothing here.

For a trip with activities

Motorbikes, skiing, surfing and diving sit outside a basic policy. They are added as an option; without it the insurer declines that exact claim.

For living abroad

A travel policy covers a trip, not a move. People living abroad need expat cover or an annual policy, and not every service sells one.

Frequent questions

Which policy will a consulate accept?
One with cover of at least €30,000 and validity spanning the whole trip. That is the common Schengen rule; individual countries publish their own requirements.
Can I buy a policy once I have already left?
Yes, such policies exist. Some services have a separate switch for it at checkout, and cover then starts a few days after purchase rather than immediately.
How does expat cover differ from travel cover?
Travel cover is written for a trip and stops working once someone lives in the country. Expat cover is written for living abroad and is sold by the year.
Will a policy pay for a chronic condition?
Usually not: insurers pay for sudden illness and injury. A flare-up of a chronic condition is typically covered only as emergency care, and that clause is worth reading before paying.
What do I do if something happens?
Call the assistance line printed on the policy first and go where it sends you. Treatment paid for on your own is not always reimbursed, and rarely in full.

A policy is one part of a move, not the whole of it

The visa, the status, the bank account and the taxes come before insurance. Describe the task — we will review the case and say where to start.

Policies are sold by the insurers and their storefronts: the contract, the payment and the claims sit on their side. The links are affiliate ones, and your price does not change because of them.
