The 90-in-180-days limit counts across the whole Schengen area, not Portugal alone. ETIAS is not running yet: once it starts, visa-free passports will need an online authorisation before travel.

What is checked at the border
- Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area and issued within the last 10 years.
- Funds for the trip: €75 per entry plus €40 per day (≈ $84 and $45). Not required if board and lodging are covered or you have a sponsorship statement from a Portuguese resident.
- Purpose of the trip and return: border guards may ask for an accommodation booking or invitation, travel plans and a return ticket.
- Fingerprints and a facial image may be taken at entry for the Entry/Exit System (EES).
How to extend your stay
A visa-free stay or short-stay visa can be extended by the migration agency AIMA for up to 90 days, renewable once for the same period. If the stay goes beyond 90 days in six months, the extension is valid for Portugal only.
Overstay penalties
A fine of €80 to €700 (≈ $90–780), rising with the length of the overstay; it is also imposed on exit. Unlawful stay is grounds for removal with an entry ban of up to 5 years.
