Turkey entry rules

Citizens of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Israel, the EU, the UK, the US, Canada, Serbia and Australia do not need to arrange a visa for Turkey in advance: the stay is 30 to 90 days depending on the passport. Citizens of Armenia apply for an e-visa online in advance. Citizens of Tajikistan and Turkmenistan need a visa from a consulate before the trip.

What is checked at the border

  • Your passport must be valid for at least 60 days beyond the permitted stay.
  • Health insurance covering the whole stay — this also applies to visa-exempt visitors.
  • A clear purpose of the trip that you can back up.
  • Enough money for the whole stay; the law sets no fixed amount.
  • Unpaid debts from a previous visa or residence-permit overstay lead to refusal of entry.

How to extend your stay

To stay beyond the visa-free period you need a residence permit, applied for online via the e-ikamet system.

Overstay penalties

Overstaying by more than 10 days is grounds for removal, and removed foreigners are banned from entry for up to 5 years. The overstay fine depends on nationality and length of the overstay.

How can I stay in Turkey longer?
A visa-free stay does not give the right to live in the country. A longer stay needs a long-term visa or a residence permit: short-term residence permit for tourism or business connections (up to 2 years at a time), residence permit for owners of residential property in Türkiye, investor residence permit (no employment in Türkiye), up to 5 years, family residence permit, student residence permit, work permit (counts as a residence permit).
