What is checked at the border

  • For entry under the unilateral visa waiver, the passport must be valid for at least 6 more months.
  • E-visa holders may enter only through listed border gates: currently 83 — 17 airports, 27 land crossings and 39 seaports.
  • Address registration: the hotel or host registers the guest with the police and asks for the passport to do so.
  • Entry is refused to children under 14 travelling without a parent, guardian or authorised adult, and to anyone deported from Vietnam less than 3 years ago.

How to extend your stay

The 45-day visa-free stay can be extended, or a visa issued, without leaving — but only through an inviting party in Vietnam (a company, organisation or person) that applies to the immigration authority.

Overstay penalties

The fine grows with the overstay: under 16 days — VND 0.5–2 million (≈ $19–77), 16–29 days — VND 5–10 million (≈ $190–385), a year or more — VND 30–40 million (≈ $1,150–1,540); from 16 days, deportation is also possible.
