About the consultation

What a tax expert consultation resolves

A one-off consultation suits cases where you need an answer before acting rather than support afterwards. Most often that means choosing a regime, checking eligibility for a relief and going through a specific transaction.

  • Whether VAT registration is required and when the obligation arises
  • Whether the company qualifies for Small Business Relief
  • How a specific transaction or payment arrangement is taxed
  • What changes on a move to another free zone or another type of activity
  • What obligations arise when staff are hired
The main point

The AED 375,000 threshold sets the rate, not the duty to register

This mistake costs money in penalties. For corporate tax the 0% rate applies up to AED 375,000 of taxable profit and 9% above it. But everyone has to register, including free zone companies, loss-making ones and those that have not started trading yet.

VAT has different thresholds, and they are counted on taxable supplies and imports rather than on profit: AED 375,000 for mandatory registration, AED 187,500 for voluntary registration.

So a company may have not a dirham of tax to pay and still be obliged to register and file returns.

Frequently asked questions

What should I prepare for the consultation?
The ownership structure, the type of activity, the turnover for the last 12 months and the plans for the period ahead. The more precise the inputs, the more specific the answer.
Does the consultation come with a written answer?
Yes, it leaves you with a summary of the conclusions and references to the rules — you can take it to an accountant or to a bank.
When is a consultation not enough and support needed?
When the question is not a one-off: regular filing, a dispute with the tax authority, a transaction with a foreign element. A consultation answers a question; support runs a process.
Does a consultation replace approaching the tax authority?
No. An official position on a contested point comes only from the tax authority itself — a consultation tells you whether it is worth approaching them and how to frame the request.
