About the returns

What returns companies in the UAE file

There are two sets of returns and they are unconnected. The VAT return is filed regularly through the year — the frequency is set by the tax authority at registration. The corporate tax return is filed once per tax period.

The duty to file arises from the fact of registration, not from having tax to pay. A nil return is a return too, and failing to file one is penalised in the same way.

Terms

The terms the expert works on

Guarantees the outcome by contract

Writes the outcome and the timeline for every service — including opening a bank account — into the contract, and answers for them.

Bills in stages

You do not pay the whole sum up front: invoices come in instalments as each stage closes.

Fixes the price in the contract

The cost is locked in and does not grow as the work goes on. Prices on the site are indicative — the final figure comes after your case is reviewed.

Charges no hidden fees

No penalties or surcharges beyond the contract. No Pactors markup either: you pay the expert their own price.

Works with lawyers of 8+ years in UAE law

The licence for your activity is matched, and the requirements worked through, by qualified lawyers.

Thinks a step ahead

Picks the zone and the licence so that a year from now you do not hit a limit and have to redo the whole thing.

Deals with authorities directly

Handles government bodies, free zones and UAE banks personally — no chain of subcontractors.

The main point

The AED 375,000 threshold sets the rate, not the duty to register

This mistake costs money in penalties. For corporate tax the 0% rate applies up to AED 375,000 (≈$100,000) of taxable profit and 9% above it. But everyone has to register, including free zone companies, loss-making ones and those that have not started trading yet.

VAT has different thresholds, and they are counted on taxable supplies and imports rather than on profit: AED 375,000 (≈$100,000) for mandatory registration, AED 187,500 (≈$51,100) for voluntary registration.

So a company may have not a dirham of tax to pay and still be obliged to register and file returns.

The basis

Why a return starts with the source documents

A return cannot be assembled at the end of the period from a bank statement. The tax authority requires a document behind every figure: an invoice, a contract, an acceptance certificate, proof of payment.

So the books are kept throughout the period rather than reconstructed before filing. Reconstructing after the event costs more and does not always settle the inspectors' questions.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to file a return if there was no activity?
Yes. The duty arises from registration, not from turnover. A nil return is filed in the ordinary way.
How often is the VAT return filed?
The frequency is set by the tax authority at registration. It is shown in the online account and changes only by decision of the authority.
Can the books be reconstructed before filing?
Technically yes, but every figure in the return has to be supported by a source document. Reconstructing after the event costs more and leaves the inspectors with questions.
