Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be a Georgian citizen or resident to marry here?
No. A citizen of any country can register a marriage in Georgia — the process doesn't depend on citizenship or resident status.
Is a Georgian marriage certificate recognised in other countries?
Yes. To use it abroad it's translated and apostilled — the apostille is recognised by parties to the Hague Convention. For Minsk Convention countries (the CIS) no apostille is needed at all.
Do both partners have to be in Georgia at the same time?
Yes, attendance is mandatory — for the partners and the witnesses — both at the filing and at the registration itself; a marriage cannot be arranged remotely.
What if one of the couple has been married before?
A certified divorce certificate or a document confirming widowhood is required — without it the application for a new marriage won't be accepted.
Does the price include the ceremony, or only the legal registration?
They're different formats: the minimum option is simply signing the documents at the House of Justice; the fuller one includes the ceremony. Confirm in advance which you need.
