A bank account in the UAE: checks and reasons for refusal
A UAE account needs an Emirates ID, a local number and proof of the source of funds. Timelines, bank requirements and the usual reasons for refusal.

- An Emirates ID is mandatory: for a personal account it belongs to the client, for a corporate one to whoever will operate the account.
- A bank may refuse without giving reasons. Preparing the documents exists precisely to remove the grounds for refusal in advance.
- Opening takes two to four weeks and depends on how transparent the business looks to compliance.
- A brokerage account is opened only after a bank account, never the other way round.
People open an account in the UAE for settlements in a dollar-pegged currency and access to the local financial system. The decision rests with the bank's compliance team, and it may refuse without giving reasons.
Here is what is asked of an individual and of a company, how long it takes and where applications usually fail.
What a personal account in the UAE requires
The basic set of documents:
- a passport and a residence visa with an Emirates ID;
- a UAE mobile number;
- proof of your address in the country;
- a bank statement showing where the money comes from.
Beyond that it depends on the visa. An employee adds an employment contract and a salary certificate; a company owner adds the incorporation documents.
Without an Emirates ID a personal account is in most cases impossible: banks require residency. Support with choosing a bank for your profile comes with a personal account in the UAE.
What a corporate account in the UAE requires
For a company the set differs:
- incorporation documents;
- a residence visa and Emirates ID for whoever will operate the account;
- a UAE mobile number;
- a description of the business: who the clients are, where the money comes from, what turnover is expected.
That last point is the decisive one. Compliance assesses not the company on paper but how clear the money flow is. The more specific the description and the better it is backed by contracts, the fewer the questions.
A minimum balance is not required for most activities, though for higher-risk operations a bank may set one. Monthly maintenance starts at AED 49 and is often waived at sufficient turnover.
How long opening an account takes
Two to four weeks. The timeline depends on the bank and on how clear the case is: the more follow-up questions compliance has, the longer the review.
Preparation can speed things up, but no one can guarantee a date — the decision belongs to the bank. Support for a corporate account runs 14 to 30 days: a corporate account in the UAE.
Why UAE banks refuse
Refusal is the bank's right under supervisory rules, and it need not explain itself. In practice the usual obstacles are:
- an unclear source of funds and gaps in statements;
- higher-risk activity with no supporting documents;
- a mismatch between the declared activity and the actual transactions;
- no connection to the UAE: neither an office nor residency for whoever operates the account.
Reapplying after a refusal is possible, but the same package gets the same answer. First find the reason for the refusal and fix the package, then apply again.
What comes after the bank account
A brokerage or investment account is opened only after a bank account — the reverse order does not work. Anyone planning to invest should therefore pick a bank with that in mind from the start.
If the account is for a company and there is no residency yet, the order flips: first the visa and Emirates ID, then the bank. How that chain works is covered in the piece on staff visas in the UAE.
