What is checked at the border

  • A valid passport linked to your visa. If the visa was granted on an older passport, bring that one too.
  • An ETA works only with the passport it was issued for: a new passport means a new ETA.
  • An Incoming Passenger Card, filled in and shown at the border.
  • Cash: there is no limit, but amounts of AUD 10,000 (≈$6,900) or more must be declared.
  • Purpose of the trip: if you visit often or stay for long periods, you may be asked about your travel purpose next time you enter.

How to extend your stay

An ETA, eVisitor or Visitor 600 cannot be extended — you need a new visa. From inside Australia you can apply for a Visitor 600 (Tourist stream, apply in Australia) unless your visa has condition 8503 'No further stay'. The charge is AUD 630 (≈$437); you must stay in Australia while it is decided.

Overstay penalties

Once the visa ends you are unlawful: you can be detained and removed, and the removal costs are charged to you. If you overstay by more than 28 days, you may be refused new visas for up to 3 years; a waiver is possible only for compelling reasons.
