Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)
An invitation from the Department of Home Affairs following selection in SkillSelect. The points threshold is 65, but scoring 65 points does not guarantee an invitation: the Department invites by ranking within the round.
Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)
A nomination by a state or territory plus an invitation from the Department of Home Affairs. Each state receives an annual nomination quota and assesses applicants against its own criteria — look them up on the website of the particular state.
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491)
A state nomination or sponsorship by a relative in a designated regional area. The period of validity of the visa and the income threshold for the 191 could not be confirmed in the source.
Employer Nomination Scheme visa (subclass 186)
A nomination by an Australian employer for a specific position. Three streams: Direct Entry, Temporary Residence Transition and Labour Agreement. The skills assessment is waived if you hold a 444 or 461 visa and have worked for the nominating employer for 2 of the last 3 years.
Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482, formerly TSS)
Employer sponsorship and an approved nomination of the position. The visa replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage visa on 7 December 2024. The streams are: Core Skills (an occupation from the Core Skills Occupation List), Specialist Skills and Labour Agreement. The threshold amounts and the visa's period of validity could not be confirmed in the source.
Distinguished talent visa (Global Talent visa / National Innovation visa, subclass 858)
An invitation from the Department of Home Affairs following consideration of an expression of interest. Since 6 December 2024 subclass 858 has been called the National Innovation visa and has replaced the Global Talent visa; the decision was announced on 14 May 2024.
Student visa (subclass 500)
The amounts of the financial requirement could not be confirmed in the source.
Partner visa (subclass 820/801)
A relationship with an Australian citizen, a permanent resident or an eligible New Zealand citizen. The amount of the visa charge could not be confirmed in the source.
Working holiday visa (Work and Holiday visa, subclass 462 / Working Holiday visa, subclass 417)
An agreement between Australia and your country of citizenship under the Working Holiday Maker programme. More than 40 countries and territories take part across the two subclasses; check your own passport against the Department's list of partners. Specified work for the second visa is agriculture, mining and construction.
Business Innovation and Investment visa (subclass 188)Closed
The programme is closed. New applications have not been accepted since July 2024. The ministry continues to assess applications lodged earlier.
