Work permit in Barbados

The document that gives a foreign professional the right to work for a specific employer in Barbados. Every foreign national registers with the Immigration Department before starting work. The application is filed by the employer or sponsor, who explains why this particular specialist is needed. For long-term positions the employer must also show that no suitable Barbados resident or citizen could be found for the role. The permit is not valid with another employer.

What to choose: a temporary position or permanent work

The type of permit depends on how long the employer is inviting the specialist for, and on whether the employer is prepared to prove a shortage of local staff.

Suitable for short-term employment

  • A contract or project for a period of up to 11 months
  • Internships and work placements with a local employer
  • The employer does not need to prove that no suitable local candidates are available
  • A compact set of documents and a faster filing

Suitable for long-term employment

  • A permanent or long-running position for a period of up to 3 years
  • The employer is prepared to confirm that no suitable Barbados resident or citizen is available
  • Willingness to undergo a medical examination and provide references
  • Entrepreneurs prepared to confirm the transfer of funds and business registration

When this programme will not suit you

You need a residence permit that is not tied to a specific employer

Consider other Barbados immigration statuses that do not require sponsorship by a local employer

The employer cannot prove that no suitable local candidate is available for a long-term position

Arrange a short-term permit for up to 11 months — no such proof is required for it

You need the right to work for yourself, change employers or combine several side jobs

Consider the entrepreneur category, with separate proof of the transfer of funds and business registration, or another immigration status

Documents to gather

The set of documents depends on the type of permit — short-term or long-term; entrepreneurs face additional requirements.

  • Short-term permit: a detailed covering letter from the employer
  • Short-term permit: completed Form C-3
  • Short-term permit: four passport photographs
  • Short-term permit: a copy of the passport page with the applicant's personal details
  • Long-term permit: completed Forms C-1 and C-2
  • Long-term permit: a medical form with X-ray results in the form of a report
  • Long-term permit: four passport photographs
  • Long-term permit: two references (letters of recommendation)
  • Long-term permit: proof of the applicant's qualifications
  • Long-term permit: a detailed covering letter from the employer
  • Long-term permit: a copy of the passport page with the applicant's personal details
  • For entrepreneurs, additionally: proof of the transfer of funds, a certificate of business registration and the necessary licences
  • Originals and copies of all documents — without payment of the fee the application is not accepted

How the process runs

The department does not publish statutory processing times, but the general sequence of filing is as follows.

  1. 1

The employer assembles the document package

The employer or sponsor prepares the set of documents for the type of permit: for a short-term permit — the covering letter, Form C-3, photographs and a copy of the passport; for a long-term permit — Forms C-1 and C-2, the medical report, references and proof of qualifications.

  2. 2

Filing the application and paying the fee

The application is filed together with the originals and copies of the documents; the fee must be paid at the moment of filing — without payment the application is not accepted for consideration.

  3. 3

Consideration of the application by the Immigration Department

For a long-term permit the department checks whether the employer has proved that no suitable and willing Barbados resident or citizen is available for the stated position.

  4. 4

Registration of the foreign worker before starting work

Every foreign national must register with the Immigration Department before beginning employment with the named employer — this is the final condition, after which work may begin.

Renewal and the grace period

No separate form for extending a short-term permit is identified on the department's website. For a long-term permit the same Forms C-1 and C-2 are used as for the initial filing — in the list of downloadable documents they are labelled precisely as the Application for Work Permit of Extension. In other words, renewal goes through the same set of forms as the initial application.

Frequently asked questions about Work permit

Who files the work permit application — the worker or the employer?
The application is filed by the employer or sponsor on behalf of the foreign worker: this duty rests expressly on the inviting party, not on the candidate.
How much does it cost to file an application, and what does the final fee depend on?
A fee of 300 Barbados dollars must be paid on filing — without payment the application will not be accepted. The final amount depends on the category of work and the period of permit requested; the department does not publish a line-by-line breakdown of these amounts on its website.
Is it necessary to prove that no local candidates are available for a short-term permit?
No, that requirement applies only to the long-term permit. For a short-term permit (up to 11 months) the employer need only file a covering letter, Form C-3, photographs and a copy of the passport — without proof that local staff are unavailable.
Can a long-term work permit be extended, and on which forms?
Yes: Forms C-1 and C-2, used for the long-term permit, are described in the list of downloadable documents expressly as the Application for Work Permit of Extension — that is, the same set of forms serves both the initial filing and the extension.
