Temporary stay permit in Colombia

An extension of temporary stay in Colombia for those who entered on a PIP permit and came from a visa-free country. The procedure is run by Migración Colombia and everything is done remotely through a personal account. The permit creates no new status and does not replace a visa: it is a technical extension of what has already been granted, within the annual limit. The application must be made while the original permit is still valid. The authority sends the finished document by email.

Processing time
3 working days from the date of payment. The finished document arrives by email.
Residence
The application is filed no later than 5 working days before the PIP expires.

Who this extension of stay suits

The PTP does not open a new status but technically extends a PIP already issued, so eligibility depends on the applicant's nationality and on whether they pay the fee.

Most foreign nationals without a visa

  • Their nationality is among those that are visa-free for Colombia
  • They hold a valid PIP obtained on entry
  • They are ready to pay the government fee on filing

Nationals of Ecuador and European Union countries

  • The same visa-free entry on a valid PIP
  • They file the same application through the same personal account
  • No extension fee is charged to them

When this programme is not suitable

The applicant's nationality requires a visa to enter Colombia

Apply for a visa at a consulate or through the migration portal — the PIP and the PTP are intended only for visa-free countries.

The PIP has already expired by the time of the application

Contact Migración Colombia directly to find out the options for regularising status — without a valid PIP a PTP application will not be accepted.

The applicant needs to stay in Colombia beyond the annual PTP limit

Consider applying for a visa — the PTP cannot be extended beyond the limit set for the calendar year.

Documents to gather

Everything is submitted as a single package through the personal account on the Migración Colombia portal.

  • A completed FUT form (Formulario Único de Trámites)
  • One PDF file with an image of the passport or national identity document
  • Documents confirming the ground on which the original PIP was issued
  • A PIP that is valid at the time the application is filed

How the process runs

The whole procedure is carried out remotely — no visit in person is required.

  1. 1

    Filing the application in advance

The application must be filed no later than 5 working days before the PIP expires — the PIP must still be valid at the time of filing, otherwise the application will not be accepted.

  2. 2

Completing the FUT form and uploading documents

The FUT form is completed in the personal account, a PDF file with an image of the passport or identity document is attached together with the documents on the ground for the original PIP, and an email address for notifications is given.

  3. 3

    Preliminary approval of the application

Migración Colombia checks the application; if it is approved, a payment link is sent to the email address given — but only if the fee applies to the applicant's nationality.

  4. 4

    Paying the fee

Payment is made online through PSE or by credit or debit card, or a receipt can be downloaded to pay at a bank; nationals of Ecuador and of European Union countries skip this step.

  5. 5

    Receiving the finished permit

3 working days from the date of payment

Migración Colombia sends the finished document to the applicant by email; no visit in person is needed to collect it.

Renewal and the grace period

A PTP can be requested again within one calendar year, but in total — consecutively or with breaks — for no more than the set limit of 180 calendar days. Once that limit is used up, the stay can no longer be extended in the same way until the start of the next calendar year, and the applicant should consider another form of regularisation, such as a visa.

Frequently asked questions about Temporary stay permit

How many times can a stay be extended on a PTP in one year?
The limit is counted not in applications but in days: in total, consecutively or with breaks, a PTP cannot be valid for longer than 180 calendar days within one calendar year.
Is there a charge for extending a PTP?
Yes, the standard fee under the 2026 schedule is COP 150,000. For nationals of Ecuador and of European Union countries the extension is free of charge.
What happens if the original PIP expires before the PTP application is filed?
A PTP application is accepted only while the PIP is still valid, so it must be filed in advance — no later than 5 working days before it expires. If the PIP has already expired, this route to an extension is unavailable and Migración Colombia must be contacted directly about other options.
How is payment made, and when does the finished permit arrive?
After preliminary approval, a payment link is sent to the email address given in the application, if the fee applies to the applicant's nationality. Payment can be made through PSE, by card or against a bank receipt; the finished document is sent by email within 3 working days of the date of payment.
Who is eligible to apply for a PTP at all?
Foreign nationals whose nationality does not require a visa to enter Colombia and who are already using the PIP entry and stay permit obtained on entering the country are eligible.
