What is checked at the border

  • You need enough money for the whole stay, since visitors may not work.
  • You need a return or onward ticket, unless you are travelling on to mainland China or Macao.
  • The purpose must be a visit: working (even unpaid), doing business or studying requires a visa.
  • Even if every requirement is met, entry can still be refused at the border.
  • To stay longer than the visa-free period, get a visa before you travel.

How to extend your stay

Extensions are possible only for a special or urgent need: online when 14 days or fewer remain, or in person or by post within 7 days of expiry, at the Immigration Department.

Overstay penalties

Overstaying is a breach of the conditions of stay and a criminal offence: a fine of up to HK$50,000 (≈ $6,400) and up to 2 years in prison.
