The 90-in-180-days limit counts across the whole Schengen area, not Hungary alone. ETIAS is not running yet: once it starts, visa-free passports will need an online authorisation before travel.

What is checked at the border
- Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years and stay valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area.
- Funds for the trip: the benchmark is €40 (≈ $45) for each day of your stay.
- You may be asked to back up the purpose and plan of the trip: accommodation booking or host's invitation, itinerary or tour booking, return ticket.
- At the Schengen external border, entries and exits are recorded in the electronic EES system with fingerprints and a facial image; it is gradually replacing passport stamps.
- If you stay in Hungary for more than 30 days, you must report your address to the immigration authority via the Enter Hungary portal after arrival.
How to extend your stay
Citizens of countries that have a bilateral agreement with Hungary (see table notes) may stay up to 90 more days after their 90 Schengen days, but only in Hungary: no trips to other Schengen countries, no work or study, and you must leave Schengen directly from Hungary. During a visa-free stay you can apply for a residence permit without leaving Hungary. A Schengen visa can be extended only under Art. 33 of the EU Visa Code: free in case of force majeure, €30 (≈ $34) for serious personal reasons.
Overstay penalties
Overstaying can lead to removal with an entry ban of up to 5 years (up to 10 years if your stay threatens security). Breaching the rules of stay is also a petty offence: a fine of HUF 6,500–200,000 (≈ $20–610).
