What is checked at the border

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months when you apply, with 2 blank pages.
  • A return or onward ticket and enough money for the stay.
  • E-visa holders may enter only through designated ports: 33 airports and 19 seaports.
  • The e-Arrival card is filled in online within 72 hours before arrival — on the Bureau of Immigration site or in the Indian Visa Su-Swagatam app; it is not a visa.
  • People with a military, security or police background (serving or retired) are not eligible for an e-visa; concealing it can lead to denied entry and deportation.

How to extend your stay

An e-visa cannot be extended or converted. If a valid reason prevents leaving on time, apply on indianfrro.gov.in before the visa expires; without approval you must leave, otherwise it counts as a wilful overstay.

Overstay penalties

Under the Immigration and Foreigners Act 2025 (in force since 1 Sep 2025), overstaying a visa carries up to 3 years in prison or a fine of up to ₹300,000 (≈ $3,400), or both.
