Temporary resident visa in Mexico

A visa for a long lawful stay in Mexico. It is obtained by those who can evidence financial means, academic or professional work, family ties, property, investment or participation in an international mobility programme. The application is filed at the Mexican consulate for the place of residence, and the status is then confirmed inside the country. Work is possible if the salary comes from abroad; a separate permit from the migration service is needed for a local employer.

How the process runs

The procedure has two stages — obtaining the visa abroad, then registering inside Mexico.

Filing the visa application at a Mexican consulate
The applicant attends the Mexican consulate for the place where they are lawfully staying, submits the passport, a photograph and evidence of one of the grounds, and pays the fee set by the federal law on fees.

Receiving the visa and entering Mexico
Once the application is approved the consulate places the visa sticker in the passport; with it the foreign national enters Mexico as a temporary resident for a period of more than 180 days and less than 4 years.

Booking an appointment at the National Migration Institute
The appointment is booked online through the migration procedures microsite: an account is created and confirmed by email, then the office, date and time of the appointment are chosen and the booking is confirmed within the time allowed.

Exchanging the visa for a resident card
Within 30 calendar days of entry the holder must attend a migration service office with the appointment slip, the passport bearing the visa and proof of payment, in order to receive the temporary resident card — the document confirming lawful stay in the country.

Renewal and the grace period

The temporary resident card is renewed through a separate procedure — «Expedición de tarjeta de residente por renovación» — completed in person at a migration service office. Like the first issue of the card, renewal is on the list of procedures available only by prior online appointment; the exact deadlines for filing the renewal application and the related conditions are published separately by the consulates and the migration service.

Frequently asked questions about Temporary resident visa

Is it possible to work on a temporary resident visa?

Yes, but only if the salary is paid by a foreign employer. If the employer is in Mexico and pays the salary inside the country, it is the employer that must obtain a separate permit from the National Migration Institute — without it a temporary resident cannot be hired lawfully.

How long is there to obtain the resident card after entering the country?

30 calendar days from entry — within that period the holder must apply to the National Migration Institute and obtain the resident card confirming lawful stay.

How does the temporary resident visa differ from the permanent resident visa?

Temporary status is limited in time — more than 180 days and less than 4 years — whereas permanent status carries no such limit and is available, for example, to pensioners with income from abroad or to people with direct family ties to a Mexican national or permanent resident.

Is attendance in person or an appointment needed to obtain the resident card?

Yes, issue of the resident card is on the migration service's list of procedures handled only by prior online appointment through the migration procedures microsite; without an allotted appointment time it is not possible to enter the office.

What if the sole purpose of the move is study?

For study there is a separate programme — the temporary resident student visa; it is listed separately from the general temporary resident visa in the list of visas for foreign nationals and is designed specifically for students.
