Resident student visa in Mexico
A long-term student status for those travelling to Mexico to study within the national education system — from bachelor's degrees to post-doctoral work. The visa is obtained in advance, at the Mexican consulate for the place of lawful stay, and the holder enters the country with it. The applicant shows a letter of admission and evidences the money for study and living costs — their own, their parents' or the university's. Work on this visa is possible only with a separate permit from the migration service.

How to evidence that there is enough money for the studies
The programme accepts different ways of proving solvency — your own or your family's money, or a scholarship from the university.
Paying yourself, through parents or through a bank
- Income over the last three months above the set minimum — evidenced by the applicant themselves, or by parents or a guardian if the applicant is under 25
- Or the balance on a bank or investment account over three months — under this option the amount required is noticeably higher than when income is used
- A letter from a bank or financial institution stating that it is willing to finance the studies also serves as evidence
Travelling on a scholarship or an international programme
- A letter from the Mexican educational institution stating that a scholarship has been awarded to you — no separate income or account evidence is then needed
- Or a basis in the form of an international agreement on student mobility between the two countries
- Suits participants in exchange programmes and holders of university grants
When this programme is not suitable
The course or placement is shorter than the standard study period of 180 days
A resident student visa is not needed — for a short trip visitor status, granted on entry, is enough
The main purpose of the move is work, not study
Temporary resident status on the basis of a job offer is needed, rather than a student visa
You want the years spent in the status to count towards naturalisation
Resident student status does not build up such a record — ordinary temporary residence or permanent residence is needed for that
The educational institution does not belong to Mexico's national education system
the institution's accreditation should be checked with the consulate in advance, or a visa on another basis considered
Documents to gather
One set of documents is needed for the visa itself at the consulate, another in Mexico for the resident card at the Migration Institute (INM).
- A valid passport or travel document
- One photograph
- A letter of admission from the Mexican educational institution — with the details of the student, the institution and the course
- Documents on solvency: proof of income, of a bank account, or a scholarship letter
- Proof of lawful stay in the country where the application is filed, if you are not a national of that country
- The receipt for the consular visa fee
- After entry — a valid migration form, the completed basic form and photographs of the prescribed format for issue of the resident card
How the process runs
The procedure has two parts: obtaining the visa at a consulate abroad, and exchanging the visa for a resident card once in Mexico.
- 1
Gathering the documents and booking a consular appointment
The appointment is booked through the MiConsulado portal — you have to choose the service and the consulate for your place of lawful stay.
- 2
Filing the application and paying the consular fee
At the appointment the set of documents is submitted and the fee is paid for acceptance, examination and, if the decision is positive, issue of the visa.
- 3
Entering Mexico on the visa
The visa in itself does not guarantee entry — the decision to admit the holder to the country is taken by the migration and health authorities at the border itself.
- 4
Exchanging the visa for a resident card at the Migration Institute
within 30 calendar days of entryYou must attend an INM office in person with the passport, the migration form and proof of payment of the fee, give fingerprints and sign the document; where the set of documents is complete and unproblematic the card is sometimes issued the same day.
Timelines and rights
Work
The study visa gives no right to work. A student requests the permit for paid activities separately, and only in Mexico, at an INM office.
Who you can bring with you
Relatives travelling with the student receive not a student visa but an ordinary temporary resident visa — and must evidence both the relationship and the means to support themselves separately.
Spouse, children and other accompanying family members

Trips, renewal and the grace period
The visa is issued to those staying longer than 180 days. A resident student visa is not issued for a shorter course.
While the student continues studying, the resident card may be renewed under the «Expedición de tarjeta por renovación» procedure. The key evidence is a letter or certificate from the educational institution confirming that the studies are continuing. The application is filed before the current card expires, with attendance in person at the Migration Institute for fresh fingerprints, a signature and payment of the fee.
How it differs from the routes next to it
The comparison is built from the official terms of the routes themselves — the source links sit on their own pages.
| Resident student visa | Permanent resident visa | Change to permanent resident status | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visa term | Stays of more than 180 days | The visa is exchanged for a resident card within 30 calendar days of entry | The permanent resident card has no expiry date and does not need renewing |
| Work | The study visa gives no right to work | A permanent resident works as an employee or self-employed without a separate INM permit | A permanent resident works as an employee or self-employed without a separate INM permit |
| Residence | The visa is issued to those staying longer than 180 days | A permanent resident lives in the country with no time limit | Four consecutive years on a temporary resident card is the main route to the status |
What comes next: permanent residence and citizenship
Route to permanent residence
INM grants permanent residence 4 years after the temporary resident permit is issued; the application is filed inside Mexico.
Route to citizenship
The SRE does not count years spent with temporary resident student status towards the period for naturalisation. The certificate requires 5 years on an ordinary temporary or permanent resident card.
