What is checked at the border

  • Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave New Zealand.
  • Everyone must complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD); it can be submitted online from 24 hours before your journey begins.
  • A paid ticket out of the country: with an NZeTA your departure date must be within 3 months of arrival (6 months for UK citizens).
  • Living funds: at least NZD 1,000 (≈$560) a month, or NZD 400 (≈$224) if accommodation is prepaid; you may be asked for proof at check-in or on arrival.
  • You can be refused entry if you are not a genuine visitor, refuse to let officers take your photo or fingerprints, or cannot show onward travel or the money to leave.

How to extend your stay

A visa cannot be extended, but from inside the country you can apply for a new Visitor Visa before the current one expires, ideally at least a month ahead. You need a genuine reason; the new visa is single-entry, with a maximum of 9 months in 18. While you wait, an Interim Visa is normally issued.

Overstay penalties

Staying without a valid visa is unlawful: you cannot work or study and risk detention and deportation. If you stay unlawfully for 42 days or more, you may be banned from returning; after deportation you cannot return during the prohibition period or until the deportation costs are repaid. Leaving voluntarily before a deportation order keeps the door open for future visas.
