Serbian origin in Serbia
Temporary residence through Serbian origin is a ground on which the Serbian Ministry of the Interior grants a foreign national status in the country. It is open to a person with Serbian roots in the direct line — through parents or more distant ancestors — even if they have never held Serbian citizenship and have never lived in Serbia. The applicant proves origin with documents; no business plan or capital is required. The decision is taken by the territorial unit of the Ministry of the Interior.

Who the status through Serbian origin suits
The set of evidence depends on the line of descent through which the Serbian roots are traced — through parents or through more distant ancestors.
The parents or the applicant come from Serbia
- Your own birth certificate shows the link with Serbia directly
- One or both parents are of Serbian origin, confirmed by their civil registry records
- The documents can be obtained from the ordinary civil registry office for the parents' place of birth
The Serbian roots go deeper — through ancestors
- Direct ancestors in the family line were of Serbian origin, but the applicant and the parents were not born in Serbia
- Origin is confirmed by archive parish registers and baptism certificates
- The documents have to be requested from church or historical archives rather than from an ordinary civil registry office
When the programme is not a fit
Serbian origin cannot be documented — neither your own, nor your parents', nor your ancestors'
Consider other grounds of temporary residence — employment, investor, start-up or talent
You are going to Serbia for employment and have no Serbian roots
The ground of “zapošljavanje” with the single permit (jedinstvena dozvola) — it gives the right to work straight away
You are already married to a Serbian citizen or are joining a close Serbian relative
The ground of “spajanje porodice” (family reunification) — the same Ministry, but a different list of documents
You need permanent status straight away rather than temporary status
Stalno nastanjenje can be granted as a special case without the residence qualification where the Serbian origin of ancestors is documented, but the application still has to be filed in person at the Ministry
Documents to gather
The exact set depends on whether origin is proved through parents or through more distant ancestors; the portal warns explicitly — check the list in advance, otherwise the application will be delayed or refused.
- An application for temporary residence in the prescribed form
- Your own birth certificate (an extract from the birth register)
- The birth certificate of one or both parents — if origin is proved through them
- Extracts from parish birth registers, baptism certificates and other documents on the Serbian origin of more distant ancestors
- A personal or official passport valid for at least 3 months longer than the period of stay requested
- A photograph of the applicant for the foreigner's card
How the process runs
A single procedure for all grounds of temporary residence — from collecting the documents on origin to the issue of the foreigner's card.
- 1
Preparing the documents on Serbian origin
The applicant collects the evidence of origin — birth records of their own and of their parents, or archive parish extracts and baptism certificates of ancestors — and checks that the passport is valid for at least 3 months longer than the period of stay requested.
- 2
Filing the application
The application may be filed electronically on the welcometoserbia.gov.rs portal or in person at the unit of the Ministry of the Interior for the place of registration or residence; an application for a minor is filed only in person by the legal representatives.
- 3
Consideration of the application
30 daysThe Ministry of the Interior takes a decision on the general ground of temporary residence within 30 days from the day the complete application is filed; if the application is filed on time, you are allowed to remain in Serbia until the end of the administrative procedure.
- 4
Notification and appointment for biometrics
After a positive decision the notification arrives in the electronic mailbox (eSanduče) on the portal with the date of the visit to the police administration to give biometric data.
- 5
Issue of the temporary residence card
After the biometric data are given, a confirmation of the start of the procedure with the foreign national's registration number is issued, and then the temporary residence card for a term of up to 3 years with a note on the right to work.
Timelines and rights
Work
Depending on the ground of temporary residence, the foreign national may have the right of free access to the labour market or the right to work in Serbia without arranging a single permit
Who you can bring with you
Your own Serbian origin does not pass to relatives automatically — the family arranges status through the separate ground of “spajanje porodice” (family reunification).
A spouse or a partner in an unregistered marriage
Relatives (srodstvo) of a Serbian citizen or resident
Adult family members
Trips, renewal and the grace period
Absence from the country is counted as follows: 10 months in total, or one absence of 6 months in a row, does not interrupt the period of residence.
The permit may be renewed no earlier than 3 months before, and no later than the day of, the expiry of the current term. On first issue the term is counted from the date the application is filed and does not exceed 3 years — the exact length depends on the ground and the documents attached. If the renewal application is filed on time, the foreign national may remain in Serbia until the administrative procedure is completed, even if the term of the previous permit has already expired.
What comes next: permanent residence and citizenship
Route to permanent residence
Persons of Serbian origin and those born in Serbia are granted stalno nastanjenje without the three-year residence qualification.
Route to citizenship
Under article 23 of the citizenship law, a person belonging to the Serbian people is admitted: from the age of 18, with legal capacity, on a written statement that you consider Serbia your country. There is no need to live in Serbia or to renounce your previous citizenship.
