Visa for professional leaders in the UK

The Global Talent Visa is a status for leaders and potential leaders in science and research, arts and culture or digital technology. The applicant either shows a win in one of the prizes on the official list, or obtains an endorsement (approval) from a specialist organisation, and then applies for the visa online.

Who can get the visa

The visa is granted in three professional fields, and each has its own endorsing body; the alternative route is a win in a prize on the official list.

Science and research

The endorsement is assessed by a specialist organisation: for example the British Academy, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society or UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)
Fast track: you have an offer of an academic or research post, an individual fellowship or a grant approved by UKRI — the endorsement decision takes 2 weeks
Peer review: for all other cases — the endorsement decision takes 5 weeks

Arts and culture

The endorsement is given by Arts Council England
The “recognised leader” level (exceptional talent) gives the right to apply for indefinite leave to remain after 3 years
The “emerging leader” level (exceptional promise) gives the right to apply for indefinite leave to remain after 5 years

Digital technology

The application is assessed by Tech Nation — including fintech, gaming, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence
You need a technical background (developer, engineer, data specialist) or a business background in a company that creates software or hardware
The endorsement decision takes 5–8 weeks

Prize winners

The prize must be named on the official list of eligible prestigious prizes — other awards from the same organisations do not count
The applicant must be the person named as the winner of the prize
No endorsement is needed — you can apply for the visa directly

Documents to gather

The full list depends on whether you apply on a prize or on an endorsement, but the basic set is as follows.

A valid passport or another document proving identity and nationality
Tuberculosis test results (if required for the applicant’s nationality)
Written consent from the agency or government that awarded a grant or scholarship for study in the United Kingdom during the past year (if there was one)
A certified translation of documents that are not in English or Welsh
Proof of winning the prize — only if the Home Office cannot verify it itself from open sources

How the process runs

The order of steps depends on whether the applicant holds a qualifying prize.

Choose the route: prize or endorsement
A winner of a prize on the official list of eligible prestigious prizes applies for the visa directly. In all other cases you must first obtain an endorsement in your field — academia or research, arts and culture, or digital technology.

Obtain the endorsement (if you have no prize)
2 weeks on the fast track or 5 weeks on peer review for science; 5–8 weeks for digital technology

The application is filed online. Prize winners pay the whole visa fee at once; endorsement holders pay the second part of the fee after the endorsement is granted.

Confirm your identity and submit the documents
Identity is confirmed through the UK Immigration: ID Check app or by giving biometrics (fingerprints and a photograph) at a visa application centre.

Receive the decision on the visa

The decision arrives by email; it states what proves the applicant’s immigration status and what to do next.

Who you can bring with you

A partner and children can apply as “dependants” — together with the main applicant or separately, before their visa expires.

Spouse, civil partner or unmarried partner

You must prove an official marriage or partnership, or living together for at least 2 years, or a relationship of at least 2 years without living together — with evidence of regular contact, financial support and care for any children in common.

Children under 18, including those born in the United Kingdom during the parent’s stay

The child must live with the applicant — except when studying at a boarding school or university — and must not be married or in a civil partnership. A full birth certificate naming both parents must be provided.

Children over 18 who already hold dependant status in the United Kingdom

They can remain dependants while they keep the relevant leave to remain.

All dependants after approval

They can work (except as a sportsperson or coach), study, leave the United Kingdom and return, and apply for indefinite leave to remain after 5 years of residence in the country.

Trips, renewal and the grace period

You must show that your centre of life is in the UK

The visa can be extended an unlimited number of times, each time for 1–5 years, provided the organisation that gave the endorsement has not withdrawn its approval (or the prize won has not been revoked) and the applicant can show earnings in their professional field, for example payslips. An extension costs the same as the first visa, plus the health surcharge; the decision usually arrives within 8 weeks. Holders of a Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa can extend under the Global Talent category. The right to apply for indefinite leave to remain arises after 3 or 5 years — depending on the professional field and the way the application was made.

Who can apply for the Global Talent Visa?
