How the process runs
3–7 days- ApplicationThe form is completed only at indianvisaonline.gov.in; no intermediaries are needed. You apply between 4 and 120 days before arrival.
- Paying the feeYou pay by card or e-wallet on the portal, no later than 4 days before departure. The bank adds a 3% commission.
- ETA decisionA «Granted» or «Rejected» answer arrives at the email in the form; it takes from 72 hours. You check the status under «Check your Visa Status».
- Arrival cardThe Bureau of Immigration requires an e-Arrival card from every foreign national within 72 hours of landing. It is filed at boi.gov.in, on the visa portal or in the Indian Visa Su-Swagatam app.
- EntryYou enter only through the airports and seaports listed on the portal. At the border you give biometrics and show the printed ETA — the officer stamps the visa into your passport.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the visa valid and how many entries does it give?
All three categories give multiple entry. The 30-day visa runs from your first entry; the one-year and five-year visas run from the date the ETA is issued. Under them you may stay no more than 180 days in a calendar year.
How much does the government charge for the visa?
The 30-day visa is free, the one-year visa costs USD 40 and the five-year visa USD 120. The bank adds 3% on top. The money is not returned even if the visa is refused.
How long does a decision take?
From 72 hours, sometimes longer. The decision is emailed to the address in the form. India has no paid expedited service.
What are the photo and passport requirements?
The photo is a JPEG between 10 KB and 1 MB, with height equal to width: face straight on, eyes open, no glasses, a light background without shadows or borders. The passport must be valid for another six months on the day you apply and have two blank pages.
