An official programme, not an equivalent

This is not a general residence permit but a separate category set out in law — Visa V «Nómada Digital», introduced by Resolución 5477 de 2022 of Colombia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in force since 2022 specifically for remote workers and digital nomads.

Tax residence after 183 days

A stay of more than 183 calendar days within any 365 days makes you a tax resident of Colombia, with an obligation to declare worldwide income on the progressive income tax scale (top rate about 39%). The visa in itself does not exempt you from this rule — income from foreign clients does not automatically become untaxed if you stay for a long time.

What we need from you

  • 1A passport of a country exempt from a visa for a short stay in Colombia (Russia and most CIS countries are on that list)
  • 2Confirmed income from a foreign source — at least 3 Colombian minimum wages (SMMLV) a month: in 2026 that is COP 5,252,715 (about USD 1,600 at the rate as at July 2026), evidenced by statements for the last 3 months without averaging
  • 3A contract, an employment certificate or another document about remote work for a foreign company/client (for owners of their own foreign company — a letter about working for it remotely)
  • 4Medical insurance for the whole period of stay with cover of at least USD 30,000: accident, illness, maternity, disability, hospitalisation, death and repatriation (an ordinary travel policy is not suitable)
  • 5A current criminal record certificate from the country of origin and/or the last place of residence — in practice consulates ask for it more and more often, so we recommend preparing it in advance

Frequently asked questions

Can you work for Colombian companies on this visa?
No. Visa V «Nómada Digital» permits only remote work for foreign employers or clients; employment with or providing services to Colombian companies and individuals is prohibited — that requires a separate work visa.
How much do you need to earn for the digital nomad visa in Colombia?
At least 3 Colombian minimum wages (SMMLV) a month, evidenced by bank statements for the last 3 months without averaging. In 2026 the threshold is COP 5,252,715 (about USD 1,600 at the rate as at July 2026).
Do Russians need a separate entry visa in order to apply for digital nomad status in Colombia?
For a short entry — no, Russia is on the list of countries exempt from such a visa, and that is what gives access to the Visa V «Nómada Digital» category. The nomad visa itself, for a long stay, still has to be arranged separately before the visa-free period of stay expires.
Is the income threshold in Colombia definitely not going to change?
The threshold is tied to Colombia's minimum wage (SMMLV), and the minimum wage for 2026 itself went through court swings: it was set by Decree 1469 of 29.12.2025 (+23% on 2025), temporarily suspended by the Council of State on 12.02.2026, and in July 2026 that same suspension was lifted — the case on the merits is continuing. It is worth checking the current threshold amount before filing.
How do you renew Colombia's digital nomad visa, and can you move with your family?
The visa is issued for up to 2 years; practice on renewal after that period differs between Colombian consulates — there is no single official position in open sources, so this is worth checking before filing. The family can apply: each beneficiary family member (a spouse/partner, children up to 25 or with a disability with no age limit) files a separate document package and pays separate fees.
