The 90-in-180-days limit counts across the whole Schengen area, not Greece alone. ETIAS is not running yet: once it starts, visa-free passports will need an online authorisation before travel.

What is checked at the border
- Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years and stay valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area.
- Funds for the trip: €50 (≈$56) per day, but at least €300 (≈$336) even for a trip of up to 5 days. Amounts are halved for minors.
- You may be asked to back up the purpose of the trip: accommodation booking or host's invitation, travel plans, return ticket.
- Fingerprints and a facial image may be taken at the border for the Entry/Exit System (EES).
How to extend your stay
A visa-free stay or a visa can be extended only in exceptional cases: force majeure, humanitarian reasons or an international agreement — and only if you have enough money to live on. The decision is made by the Ministry of Citizen Protection.
Overstay penalties
On departure a fine is charged: four annual residence permit fees for an overstay of up to 30 days and eight for a longer one. Since 2025 unlawful stay is also a criminal offence — at least 2 years in prison and a fine from €5,000 (≈ $5,600), but the sentence is suspended if the person leaves at once. A return decision may come with an entry ban of up to 10 years.
