Digital nomad visa in Greece
A Greek national visa for citizens of countries outside the European Union and the European Economic Area who continue to work for foreign employers or foreign clients while they are in Greece. It gives the right to live in the country lawfully, but it does not open access to the Greek labour market — neither to employment with a local employer nor to business inside the country.
Who can obtain it
By type of employment
- An employee of a foreign company — under an employment contract with an employer registered outside Greece
- A self-employed professional or freelancer with one or several clients outside Greece
- The owner or co-owner of their own business registered abroad who manages it remotely
By formal conditions
- Citizenship of a country outside the European Union and the European Economic Area
- The work is carried out remotely, using the internet and means of communication, without being physically present at an employer in Greece
- Income is proved at the level set for this category and does not come from a business or an employer inside Greece
What it costs
| Consular fee for the national visa | 75 EUR |
|---|---|
| Fee for the type «Ι.8» residence permit (after the first year) | +1,000 EUR |
| Fee for «Ι.8» for recipients of a pension from a Greek state fund | 150 EUR |
Documents to gather
In addition to the standard package for a type D national visa — passport, photographs, health insurance and a criminal record certificate — the consulate asks for documents confirming the remote nature of the work and the sufficiency of the income.
- A declaration on the purpose of the stay: the applicant confirms in writing that they are moving in order to work remotely and will not provide services to an employer registered in Greece
- An employment contract or a services contract with an employer or client registered outside Greece; for a fixed-term contract the remaining term has to cover the whole period of the visa
- For self-employed people with several foreign clients — equivalent services contracts with each of them
- For owners of their own business abroad — details of the applicant's position in the company, its name, registered address, field and object of activity
- Evidence of sufficient income at the level set for this category — an employment contract, an income certificate or a bank account statement
- The receipt for payment of the consular fee for the national visa
How the process runs
The procedure runs in two stages: first the consular visa outside Greece, then — if you need to stay longer — a residence permit inside the country.
- 1
Collect the package of documents
before the application is filedYou prepare the declaration on the purpose of the visit, evidence of work or business outside Greece and confirmation of sufficient income — in accordance with the requirements of art. 68 of the Migration Code.
- 2
File the application with the consulate
in person, by post or by registered letterYou file the package with the Greek consulate at your place of permanent residence — in person, by e-mail or by registered letter.
- 3
Receive an answer on the status of the application
within the period set by lawThe consulate is obliged to confirm receipt of the application and to report its status within a fixed period, and then to complete the issue of the visa at a single point of contact with the applicant.
- 4
Receive the national visa of category «Ζ.1»
the visa is valid for up to a yearThe visa is issued for a limited period and allows entry to Greece and lawful remote work for foreign employers or clients.
- 5
Obtain the «Ι.8» residence permit if you are staying longer
the application is filed before the visa expiresWhile the conditions of the visa continue to be met, before it expires you file an application with the directorate for foreigners and migration of the regional administration at your place of residence — and receive a residence permit for two years.
Who you can bring with you
The visa extends to the applicant's closest relatives — they receive separate visas, running to the same date, without the right to work in Greece.
A spouse or a partner in an officially registered union
Common minor children, including adopted children with a decision recognised in Greece
Other minor children of the applicant or of their spouse/partner
Trips, renewal and the grace period
No strict day-count regime
The first national visa is valid for a limited period — up to a year. If the conditions are still met, before the visa expires the applicant files for a type «Ι.8» residence permit for people with sufficient means — it is issued for two years. The open text of the law does not set out the procedure for further renewals after that period; the current requirements are checked with the directorate for foreigners and migration of the regional administration at the place of residence.
