Digital nomad visa for Spain

Non-lucrative residence permit (Residencia temporal no lucrativa)

Initial temporary residence permit without the right to work, for foreign nationals with sufficient means of their own. Legal basis: Ley Orgánica 4/2000 (arts. 30 bis, 31) and Real Decreto 1155/2024 (arts. 60-63).

Residence and employment permit (Autorización inicial de residencia temporal y trabajo por cuenta ajena)

Initial authorisation for temporary residence and employed work; the application is lodged by the employer. The occupation must appear in the catalogue of hard-to-fill vacancies, or the employer must show that the vacancy cannot be filled from the local labour market; a separate regime applies to nationals of Chile and Peru under bilateral agreements, and to cases under art. 40 LO 4/2000. Legal basis: Ley Orgánica 4/2000 (arts. 36, 38, 40), Real Decreto 1155/2024 (arts. 72-79).

Self-employment residence permit (Autorización inicial de residencia temporal y trabajo por cuenta propia)

Initial authorisation for temporary residence and self-employed work, for foreign nationals starting an independent activity in Spain. Legal basis: Ley Orgánica 4/2000 (arts. 25 bis, 36, 37), Real Decreto 1155/2024 (arts. 82-85).

Study stay (Autorización de estancia de larga duración por estudios)

Authorisation for a long stay to pursue higher education or post-compulsory secondary education, covering family members and renewal. Legal basis: Directive (EU) 2016/801, Ley Orgánica 4/2000 (arts. 25 bis, 33), Real Decreto 1155/2024 (arts. 34-36, 52-58). A higher education student may be accompanied by a spouse or registered partner, minor children, adult children with a disability and people providing support.

Family reunification residence permit (Autorización de residencia temporal por reagrupación familiar)

Temporary residence permit for the family members of a foreign national lawfully resident in Spain. Legal basis: Directive 2003/86/EC, Ley Orgánica 4/2000, Real Decreto 1155/2024.

EU long-term residence (Autorización de residencia de larga duración-UE)

EU long-term resident status, giving the right to live and work in Spain indefinitely on the same terms as Spanish nationals and easing mobility to other EU countries. Legal basis: Directive 2003/109/EC, Ley Orgánica 4/2000 (art. 32), Real Decreto 1155/2024 (arts. 175-178).

Citizenship by naturalisation (Nacionalidad española por residencia)

Acquisition of Spanish citizenship by period of residence. Spanish embassies and consulates abroad do not handle naturalisation applications: «Las Embajadas y Consulados de España en el extranjero no realizan trámites de nacionalidad española por residencia» — the procedure is run by the Ministry of Justice.

Golden visa for investors (Visado y autorización de residencia para inversores) — abolishedClosed

Formerly — visas and residence permits for investors under articles 63-67 of Ley 14/2013. The abolition took effect on 3 April 2025. Visas and permits already issued were not cancelled.
