Leaving the UAE during the process resets it

From the moment you arrive for the medical test until the residence visa is issued you cannot leave the country. If you fly out, the fingerprinting and the medical test have to be done again and the timeline shifts. Do not plan trips in that window.

A price that is too low is a sign of fraud

A visa application consists of government fees, the medical test and biometrics — those items do not compress. An offer noticeably below the market means either that some of the steps will not be carried out or that the documents will be forged. Check item by item what the price covers, and do not transfer money before there is a contract.

About the visa

What the UAE remote worker visa is

The UAE issues a one-year residence permit to people who live in the country but earn outside it. Dubai's residency authority states the condition plainly: prove a monthly income of at least $3,500 or the equivalent in another currency.

The visa is meant for employees only. Dividends, rental income and other passive income do not serve as a basis — you need an employer outside the UAE.

The status requires neither a company of your own in the UAE nor a sponsoring employer. That is what sets it apart from a work visa and from residence through company formation.

How it works

How a UAE residence visa works

A UAE residence visa is not a stamp in a passport but a chain of three documents. First comes the entry permit, then the residence visa itself, and only after that the Emirates ID, the resident's plastic card. Without an Emirates ID you cannot open an account, rent a home or get a phone line.

A visa always rests on a basis: property, your own company, employment, income from abroad. Once the basis is gone, the status is not renewed.

Midway through the procedure you have to come to the UAE for the medical test and fingerprinting. This is the only step that cannot be done remotely, and you cannot leave the country before the visa is issued: leaving resets the procedure.

Medical insurance is mandatory. Without a valid policy a residence visa will not be issued or renewed.

Limitation

What the remote worker visa does not allow

The frame is strict: working inside the UAE and carrying on commercial activity here are prohibited. The income has to come from an employer outside the country.

Anyone planning to hire people in the UAE, invoice local clients or open a business here needs a different basis — company formation or a freelancer licence.

Documents

Documents for the UAE remote worker visa

  • A passport valid for at least six months
  • An employment contract with an employer outside the UAE for at least a year
  • A salary letter from the employer
  • A six-month bank statement showing salary credits

The statement has to show regular salary credits — one-off transfers for the right amount do not settle the question.

The choice

Remote worker visa or freelancer licence

The difference is not the price but where the money comes from. The remote worker visa is for people whose income is already abroad; it does not allow working with clients inside the UAE. A freelancer licence allows you to operate in the UAE itself.

Getting it wrong is expensive: the remote worker visa bars work in the UAE, and a freelancer licence does not suit someone on a foreign company's payroll.

Family

How to bring your family on a UAE residence visa

A resident with an Emirates ID sponsors their family: spouse, children and parents. Relatives' visas are issued for the same term as the sponsor's.

The order is strict: the main applicant receives their status first, and only then does the family application start. Filing everything as one package will not work.

Frequently asked questions

Will income from dividends or rent qualify?
No. The visa is meant for employees — you need an employment contract with an employer outside the UAE.
Can I work in the UAE on this visa?
No. Work inside the UAE and commercial activity here are prohibited. For that you set up a company or a freelancer licence.
What income do I have to prove?
Dubai's residency authority names a threshold of $3,500 a month or the equivalent in another currency.
How long is the visa issued for, and can it be renewed?
For a year. Renewal runs on the same conditions — income and employment are proven again.
Can I bring my family?
Yes, a resident sponsors their spouse, children and parents once they have their own status.
Is it true that $5,000 is required rather than $3,500?
The official threshold is $3,500: it is stated on the pages of Dubai's residency authority and on the UAE government portal. The figure of $5,000 turns up in the practice of individual service centres, which screen applicants more strictly than the rule requires. Treat $3,500 as the minimum and leave yourself room above it.
Will income from several sources qualify?
The requirement is a proven income from employment outside the UAE. If there are several sources, each one is evidenced by a contract and by credits on the statement. Whether a particular filing channel will accept such a set is something we check before any fees are paid.
Is the medical test compulsory?
Yes. Without it the residence part of the visa is not issued — the examination is taken at an accredited UAE facility and cannot be done remotely.
Can I apply while already in the UAE?
Yes, applications can be filed both from abroad and from inside the country. Filing from inside adds a separate fee — we confirm its size at the consultation, as it changes.
Can I open a business in the UAE on this visa?
No. The visa's condition is employment by a company outside the UAE. For a business of your own in the country you set up a company or a freelancer licence.
