Brazil entry rules

Citizens of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, Israel, the EU, the UK, Türkiye and Serbia do not need to arrange a visa for Brazil in advance: the stay is 30 to 90 days depending on the passport. Citizens of the US, Canada and Australia apply for an e-visa online in advance. Citizens of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan need a visa from a consulate before the trip.

What is checked at the border

  • A ticket out of Brazil — return or onward.
  • Enough money for the length and purpose of the trip; no fixed amount is set.
  • Proof of the purpose of the trip: extra documents may be requested.
  • A valid passport with no alterations or signs of forgery.
  • Days left: if you have used up your stay for the current migration year, entry is refused.

How to extend your stay

The Federal Police can extend your stay by up to 90 days — no more than 180 days per migration year in total. Extensions are granted only to nationals of countries that offer reciprocity to Brazilians.

Overstay penalties

A fine for each day of overstay: at least R$100 (≈ $20), capped at R$10,000 (≈ $2,000) in total. Those who neither leave nor regularize their status by the set deadline are deported.

A visa-free stay does not give the right to live in the country. A longer stay needs a long-term visa or a residence permit: digital nomad visa (VITEM XIV) — for remote work for a foreign employer, retirement visa (VITEM XIV), investor visa (VITEM IX), work visa (VITEM V), student visa (VITEM IV), family reunification visa (VITEM XI).
