Residence permit for work purposes (Autorização de residência para fins laborais)

Lei de Migração nº 13.445 of 24 May 2017; Decreto nº 9.199 of 20 November 2017; the normative resolutions of the National Immigration Council (CNIg). The procedure is entirely electronic, through the MigranteWeb system; attendance in person is not required. It is run by the Coordenação Geral de Imigração Laboral of the Ministry of Justice.

Residence permit by investment (Autorização de residência — realização de investimento)

Governed by the normative resolutions of the National Immigration Council (CNIg) within the framework of Lei de Migração nº 13.445/2017. Decree nº 12.657 of 7 October 2025 handed the setting of the conditions to a joint act of the ministers of justice and foreign affairs; the Ministry of Justice still refers to the CNIg resolutions as in force. The thresholds are set by resolutions RN 13/2017 (investment in a company) and RN 36/2018 (property). RN 49 of 25 June 2024 amended RN 13 and the way the transfer of funds is evidenced under RN 36; it did not change the property amounts.

Residence permit for study (Autorização de residência — estudo)

Lei de Migração nº 13.445/2017 and Decreto nº 9.199/2017. A change of course or educational institution must be reported to the Federal Police. The period of the residence permit does not coincide with the period of the study visa.

Residence permit and migrant card (Autorização de Residência e Carteira de Registro Migratório — CRNM)

The service is run by the Federal Police (Polícia Federal) through its migration units in the states.

Ordinary naturalisation (Naturalização ordinária)

The required period of residence must already have accrued at the time the application is filed. «Significant services» and professional abilities are assessed by the Migration Department of the National Secretariat of Justice.

Extraordinary naturalisation (Naturalização extraordinária)

Digital nomad residence permit (Nômade digital, VITEM XIV / RN CNIg-MJSP nº 45)

Financial requirement

Means of subsistence from a foreign payer from US$ 1,500.00 a month, or available bank funds from US$ 18,000.00.

Documents

At the consulate you submit a travel document, medical insurance valid in Brazil, a ticket for entry, a criminal record certificate and documents on working as a remote specialist. Once in Brazil, for the residence permit you submit a signed application, an identity document, criminal record certificates for the last five years and proof of the link with the foreign employer.

Validity

The initial period of residence is up to one year.

Right to work

You work remotely for a foreign employer only. Working for a Brazilian employer closes off access to the status.

Residence conditions

The period of residence may be extended for an equal period on submission of updated documents, a copy of the CRNM and criminal record certificates.
