Residence permit for researchers in Czechia

A permit for third-country nationals coming to the Czech Republic to carry out scientific research under a hosting agreement with an accredited research organisation — a state research institution, a university or an organisation from the official register. The holder may work freely in the Czech Republic for the whole term of the agreement and travel within the Schengen area without a visa.

Who can obtain it and how to apply

The permit is granted on the basis of a hosting agreement with a research organisation from the official Czech register.

What counts as a research organisation

  • Public research institutions
  • Universities
  • Other organisations from the register approved by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports for hosting researchers from third countries

Filing from abroad

  • In person at a Czech diplomatic mission in the country that issued the document, or in the country of citizenship
  • Or in a country where the applicant has lived lawfully and continuously for 2 years or more on a long-term or permanent residence permit — for EU countries, only at the visa centre in Dresden
  • Or at any Czech diplomatic mission, if the applicant is a citizen of a country on a separate list

Filing while already in the Czech Republic

  • Holders of a long-stay visa, other than a visa for completing a stay or for seasonal employment
  • Holders of any residence permit, other than a residence permit for completing a stay where they have lived in the Czech Republic for less than 3 years
  • Holders of the same type of residence permit issued by another EU country (except Ireland and Denmark), where the research in the Czech Republic will last more than 1 year — the application may be filed within a year of arrival
  • The application is filed in person only at a Ministry of the Interior office

  • At the authority's request — a medical certificate and certificates of no criminal record from countries where the applicant has lived continuously for 6 months or more over the last 3 years

How the residence permit for scientific research is arranged inside the Czech Republic

    Preparing the documents

    Gather the application form, passport, a photograph, the hosting agreement and the research organisation's written undertaking to cover the costs of the stay beyond the term of the permit.

    Completing the application form

    The form can be completed online, printed and signed, or obtained free of charge at a Ministry of the Interior office and filled in by hand.

    Booking an appointment

    An appointment at a Ministry of the Interior office can be booked in advance online or by telephone; without an appointment the applicant is seen in the order of the queue.

    Filing the application

    The application is filed in person at a Ministry of the Interior office no later than the last day of validity of the current visa or residence permit; you are given a reference number for tracking the status.

    Examination of the application

    60 days

    The Ministry of the Interior checks the documents and the conditions for issuing the permit; the clock stops if the proceedings are suspended or additional documents have been requested.

    Booking an appointment to give biometrics

    After a positive decision you need to book an appointment by telephone to give biometric data.

    Giving the biometric data

    Attend the appointment with your passport; the date for collecting the finished card is agreed at the same time.

    The finished card must be collected no later than 60 days from the date the biometric data was given.

The family's right to follow the researcher

Family members of the holder of this residence permit
If the researcher exercises the right to move to another EU country on the basis of the same Czech permit directly on the territory, without visiting a diplomatic mission, their family members may apply for a family reunification residence permit in the same way.

Trips, renewal and the grace period

Holders of an equivalent residence permit from another EU country may apply once they are already in the Czech Republic, provided the research will last more than a year. Once the research is complete, a residence permit for job-seeking or starting a business is available for up to 9 months

The permit is renewed many times, each time for a maximum of 2 years, provided the researcher continues their research work in the Czech Republic. The application is filed no later than the last day of validity of the current permit and no earlier than 120 days before it expires. The administrative fee is 2,500 crowns and the examination takes 60 days.

What comes next: permanent residence and citizenship

Route to permanent residence

Permanent residence is granted after five years of continuous residence in the Czech Republic. A certificate of the Czech language examination is required: those under 15 or over 60, and those who have studied at a Czech school for at least one academic year, are exempt. The fee is 2,500 crowns, or 1,000 for children under 15; within the country the decision takes 60 days.

Route to citizenship

Citizenship is applied for by those who have lived with permanent residence for five consecutive years or accumulated ten years of residence in total. They sit an examination in Czech and in Czech life: the constitutional system, culture, geography and history. The ministry decides within 180 days; the fee is 2,000 crowns, or 500 for a minor.
