Czech study residence permit in Czechia

The study residence permit is a long-stay permit in the Czech Republic for foreign nationals from outside the EU who come to study: students on accredited university programmes, those on language or professional preparation before university, and participants in school or college exchange programmes. It is arranged through a consulate abroad, or by application inside the Czech Republic if the applicant already holds another valid long-term status.

Who can obtain the study residence permit

Three cases under the law (art. 64)

A student on an accredited university programme
A participant in language or professional preparation for a university programme — where it is organised by a state university, an EU programme or an international agreement
A secondary school pupil or college student on an exchange programme

Where the application may be filed

In person at a Czech consulate or diplomatic mission abroad — you may apply for the residence permit directly, without an intermediate student visa
In person at a Ministry of the Interior office inside the Czech Republic — if the applicant already holds another valid long-term residence permit or visa (with certain exceptions) or a student residence permit or visa from another EU country
A holder of a residence permit for family reunification may change the purpose of stay to study only after three years of residence in the Czech Republic or on reaching the age of majority

The sum to be evidenced as funds is not fixed as a single figure — it is calculated by a formula: 15 times the subsistence minimum plus 2 times the subsistence minimum for each full month of stay other than the first. From 1 January 2023 the subsistence minimum is 3,130 crowns a month: for a year of study you must evidence 115,810 crowns.

How the process runs

The application is filed in person only: abroad at a Czech consulate or diplomatic mission, and inside the country at a Ministry of the Interior office.

Gather the documents
The application form, passport, proof of accommodation and of funds, a photograph, health insurance and the original certificate of enrolment or confirmation of study.

File the application in person
Abroad — at a Czech consulate or mission, at the applicant's choice: directly for the residence permit or first for a long-stay student visa. Inside the Czech Republic — at a Ministry of the Interior office, no later than the last day of validity of the current residence permit or visa.

Pay the fee
2,500 crowns — the consular fee abroad or the administrative fee inside the country, payable by card.

Free access to the labour market: work without an additional permit

Trips, renewal and the grace period

After completing an accredited university programme you may obtain a residence permit for job-seeking or starting a business for up to 9 months, with no right of renewal

Study on an accredited university programme may be renewed many times, each time for a maximum of 2 years. Language or professional preparation for a university programme may be renewed only once. In other cases, for example a study visit or volunteering, the study residence permit cannot be renewed. The renewal application is filed no later than the last day of validity of the current residence permit, but no earlier than 120 days before it expires.

What comes next: permanent residence and citizenship

Route to permanent residence

Permanent residence is granted after five years of continuous residence, but time spent studying counts at half rate: two years of study give one year of qualifying residence. A certificate of the Czech language examination is required. The fee is 2,500 crowns; within the country the decision takes 60 days.

Route to citizenship

Citizenship is applied for by those who have lived with permanent residence for five consecutive years or accumulated ten years of residence in total. They sit an examination in Czech and in Czech life: the constitutional system, culture, geography and history. The ministry decides within 180 days; the fee is 2,000 crowns, or 500 for a minor.
