India business e-Visa in India

India's electronic business visa is a sub-category of the e-Visa for trips on company business: negotiations, business meetings, conferences and lectures at the invitation of an Indian party. It is arranged entirely online, confers no right to employment and does not lead to permanent residence.

Types of business e-Visa

India issues the business e-Visa in three forms, depending on the purpose of the trip.

Ordinary business visa (e-B1V)

  • For business trips: negotiations, meetings with partners, participation in exhibitions
  • The applicant's business card or a letter of invitation from an Indian company is attached to the application
  • Multiple entry, with a continuous stay of up to 180 days per visit

Conference visa (e-B5V)

  • For taking part in an event that the organiser has registered on the conference.mha.gov.in portal
  • The organiser's invitation is attached to the application, together with clearances from India's Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs
  • Valid for 30 days from the date of arrival, multiple entry

Visa for GIAN lectures and filming (e-B6V)

  • For lectures under the Global Initiative for Academic Networks — an invitation from the university and an admission order from IIT Kharagpur are required
  • For filming — permission from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and a letter of intent setting out the details of the shoot are required
  • Valid for 365 days from the date the ETA is issued, multiple entry

Documents to gather

For the standard business visa (e-B1V), in addition to the passport:

  • A scan of the passport page bearing the photograph and personal details
  • The business card of the applicant's company, or a letter of invitation from an Indian company giving its address and telephone number

How the process runs

How to obtain an ordinary business e-Visa (e-B1V):

  1. 1

    Filing the application online

    4–120 days before arrival

The application is filed through the official portal indianvisaonline.gov.in no earlier than 120 days and no later than 4 days before the date of arrival in India.

  2. 2

    Paying the fee

The amount depends on the applicant's citizenship, and the bank charges a further 3% commission. The money is not refunded even if the visa is refused.

  3. 3

    Awaiting the decision

India communicates the decision (Granted or Rejected) to the email address given in the form. The status can be checked on the portal under Check your Visa Status.

  4. 4

Receiving the electronic travel authorisation (ETA)

365 days from the date the ETA is issued

The authorisation is valid for 365 days from the date of issue and gives the right to multiple entry. It is printed out and presented on arrival at the immigration control point, where an eVisa stamp is placed in the passport.

Trips, renewal and the grace period

No registration is required for a stay of up to 180 days. Those who remain longer register with the FRRO or FRO within two weeks of their 180th day in India.

The electronic business visa cannot be extended or transferred to another visa category. For a longer stay, or for a different purpose of travel, an ordinary visa must be obtained from an Indian mission abroad.

What comes next: permanent residence and citizenship

Route to permanent residence

The electronic visa is not extended and not converted into another category. There is no route to permanent residence through it: for a long stay you obtain an ordinary visa of the required type.

Route to citizenship

Naturalisation is governed by the Citizenship Act 1955: 11 years of residence in India are required. For Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan the period is reduced to 5 years.
