India medical e-Visa in India

The electronic medical visa is a sub-category of India's e-Visa for foreign nationals travelling for treatment at an Indian hospital. It is arranged entirely online, confers no right to employment and does not lead to permanent residence in the country.

Who can obtain it

The medical e-Visa comes in two forms: for the patient and for the person accompanying them.

Patient (e-Medical Visa)

Travels for treatment at an Indian hospital, including treatment under the Indian systems of medicine
Attaches to the application a letter from the hospital on its letterhead — giving the patient's name, citizenship, passport number and the expected date of admission
Citizenship must be on the list of countries admitted to the e-Visa (Russia is on the list)
The passport is valid for at least 6 months at the time of filing and has at least two free pages for the stamp

Accompanying person (e-Medical Attendant Visa)

Accompanies a patient entering on an e-Medical Visa
No more than two attendant visas are issued per patient
The only document required is a scanned copy of the passport biodata page

Documents to gather

The set of documents depends on whether you apply as the patient or as an accompanying person.

How the process runs

The whole procedure takes place online on the indianvisaonline.gov.in portal.

Filing the application and uploading the documents

Complete the form on the portal and upload a photograph and a scan of the passport biodata page. The patient must additionally attach a letter from the Indian hospital on its letterhead giving the expected date of admission.

Paying the fee online
Payment is by card or by payment wallet; the bank charges a further 3% commission on the amount of the fee. Payment must be made at least 4 days before the trip, otherwise the application will not be processed.

Receiving the decision by email
The status of the application (Granted/Rejected) is communicated to the email address given at the time of filing; the status can also be checked under Check your Visa Status on the portal.

Presenting the ETA at the border
The printed electronic travel authorisation (ETA) is presented at passport control at one of the airports or seaports on the list for the e-Visa — the visa is stamped into the passport there.

Who you can bring with you

The medical e-Visa is intended for the patient, but a separate visa is issued for those travelling with them.

Person accompanying the patient

Obtains a separate e-Medical Attendant Visa. It is valid for 60 days from the date of arrival, with multiple entry. No more than two such visas are issued per patient's e-Medical Visa.

Trips, renewal and the grace period

The visa confers no resident status and is intended for a short trip for treatment. It cannot be extended or changed for another status.

The electronic visa is not extended and not converted into another category. There is no route to permanent residence through it: for a long stay you obtain an ordinary visa of the required type.

Route to citizenship

Naturalisation is governed by the Citizenship Act 1955: 11 years of residence in India are required. For Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan the period is reduced to 5 years.

Frequently asked questions about India medical e-Visa

Who can obtain the e-Medical Visa?

The visa is available to nationals of the countries on the list admitted to the e-Visa (Russia among them) who are travelling for treatment at an Indian hospital. A letter from the hospital on its letterhead is attached to the application — giving the patient's name, citizenship, passport number and the expected date of admission. The visa is not available to holders of diplomatic and official passports, to nationals of Pakistan, or to persons whose parents or grandparents were born in or permanently resided in Pakistan.

How much does the e-Medical Visa cost for a Russian national?

The fee for Russian nationals is USD 120, both for the e-Medical Visa and for the e-Medical Attendant Visa for an accompanying person. The bank charges a further 3% commission on the amount of the fee. The charge is not refunded even if the visa is refused — it is levied for considering the application.

When should the application for the e-Medical Visa be filed?

The application is filed online at least 4 days before the expected date of arrival. The filing window opens 120 days in advance: if, for example, the application is filed on 1 September, the date of arrival may be chosen between 5 September and 2 January.

How long is the e-Medical Visa valid and how many attendants may travel with the patient?

The e-Medical Visa is valid for 365 days from the date of arrival in India, with multiple entry. The attendant visa (e-Medical Attendant) is valid for 60 days from the date of arrival, likewise with multiple entry. No more than two attendant visas are issued per patient.

Can the e-Medical Visa be extended if the treatment takes longer?

No. The e-Visa is not extended and is not transferred to another category — this applies both to the e-Medical Visa and to the attendant visa. If the treatment takes longer than the visa allows, an ordinary (non-electronic) visa must be obtained.
