EB-1 extraordinary ability visa (Employment-Based Immigration: First Preference EB-1)
Three subcategories: EB-1A — extraordinary ability in the sciences, arts, education, business or athletics; EB-1B — an outstanding professor or researcher; EB-1C — a multinational company manager or executive. EB-1C: a permanent job offer in a managerial post with a US employer that has been doing business for at least 1 year, and at least 1 year of work with a related organisation abroad. According to the page, EB-1 visas are usually available straight away, whatever the country of origin.
EB-3 employment immigration (Employment-Based Immigration: Third Preference EB-3)
Three subcategories: skilled workers — at least 2 years of training or experience; professionals — a US bachelor's degree or its equivalent, where the post requires a bachelor's degree; other workers — unskilled labour with less than 2 years of training, and neither seasonal nor temporary. The annual quota is 40,000 visas, of which no more than 10,000 go to the other (unskilled) workers category.
Family immigration: immediate relatives and the preference categories (Family Immigration)
Immediate relatives of a US citizen: the spouse, an unmarried child under 21, and a parent of a US citizen who is aged 21 or over. The preference categories: F1 — unmarried adult children of US citizens; F2A — spouses and minor children of permanent residents; F2B — unmarried adult children of permanent residents; F3 — married children of US citizens.
H-1B work visa (H-1B Specialty Occupations)limited
A specialty occupation post that requires the application of highly specialised knowledge and, as the minimum entry requirement for the profession, a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field. The quota is 65,000 visas a year (the regular cap) plus 20,000 for holders of a master's or higher degree from a US institution. The additional fee of USD 100,000 under the presidential proclamation of 21.09.2025 is currently NOT being charged: on 08.06.2026 the District Court of Massachusetts (State of California v. Mullin, 1:25-cv-13829) set aside the agency guidance on it, and on 24.07.2026 the First Circuit Court of Appeals refused the government a stay of that ruling. DHS is complying with the court's decision, but states that if the injunction is lifted it intends to resume charging the payment.
DV visa lottery (Diversity Visa Program)limited
A draw of immigrant visas among nationals of countries with low levels of immigration to the USA. From 23.12.2025 the State Department has suspended the ISSUE of all visas to DV applicants. Applicants may file visa applications and attend interviews, and the department continues to schedule interviews, but visas are not being issued; there are no exceptions to this guidance. Visas issued earlier have not been revoked. The reason is a review of the programme's vetting and selection procedures. For the DV-2026 programme all applicants must receive a visa or adjust status before the end of the 2026 fiscal year (30.09.2026).
