The digital nomad visa in Estonia
An official visa for remote employees and freelancers with income from €4,500 a month (gross) — Estonia introduced the DNV as one of the first countries in the world, back in August 2020. There is a short-stay Type C format (up to 90 days) and a long-stay Type D (up to 365 days), but it is a visa, not a residence permit: there is no renewal, and family members apply separately.

Estonia introduced a separate visa category for digital nomads (the DNV) by an amendment to the Aliens Act that came into force on 1 August 2020 — Estonia became one of the first countries in the world with a visa for exactly this purpose, rather than a general residence permit based on income. The Type C format (short-stay, up to 90 days within 180) costs €90, and Type D (long-stay, up to 365 days) costs €120.
The DNV does not give resident status and does not open a direct route to permanent residence or Estonian citizenship. This visa cannot be extended or reissued (per the official e-Residency FAQ) — when it expires you have to leave; the maximum total stay on a DNV is 548 days in any 730 consecutive days.

Official terms
Financial requirement
The state fee is EUR 120. Income is proved by documents covering the 6 months before filing: they must show the amount, the regularity and the source. For a long-stay visa, sufficient funds are considered to be EUR 70 for each day of permitted stay.

Right to work
- The visa is for work that does not depend on location: under a contract with a company registered abroad, as the holder of a share in a foreign company, or for foreign clients
- The visa does not allow you to work for an Estonian employer — for that the employer separately registers short-term employment with the Police and Border Guard Board
Residence conditions
The visa gives up to 365 days of stay within 12 consecutive months. The period counted towards a long-term residence permit and citizenship is measured in years of living on a residence permit, not on a visa.

What comes next: permanent residence and citizenship
Route to permanent residence
A long-term resident's residence permit is granted after 5 years of living in Estonia on a temporary residence permit immediately before filing. You need stable lawful income, Estonian at level B1, registration of your place of residence in the population register and Health Insurance Fund cover. It is issued indefinitely.
Route to citizenship
Citizenship is granted after 8 years of living in Estonia, 5 of them permanently, holding a long-term residence permit or the right of residence. You take an examination in the Estonian language and an examination on the Constitution and the Citizenship Act.
