This is an official programme, given its own legal basis, for remote workers

The Welcome Stamp was introduced in July 2020 and set out in a separate Remote Employment Act (as amended in 2021) specifically for remote employees and freelancers with foreign income — this is not a general residence permit based on financial solvency but a separate visa category with its own income threshold, duration and tax treatment.

The programme is regularly extended by the Cabinet — its status at the time of filing is worth checking

The relevant Act is periodically extended by a decision of the Cabinet of Barbados; according to the data as at the end of 2023 the programme had been extended to 31 December 2026. Closer to that date, before filing an application, it is worth checking whether the programme has been extended for a further period.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Barbados Welcome Stamp an official digital nomad visa or an ordinary income-based residence permit?
It is an official separate category: introduced in 2020 and set out in the Remote Employment Act (as amended in 2021) specifically for remote employees and freelancers with foreign income, with its own income threshold of $50,000/year — this is not a general residence permit based on financial solvency.
Do you have to pay tax in Barbados on the Welcome Stamp?
Holders of the visa are non-residents of Barbados for income tax purposes regardless of the number of days spent on the island, so income from abroad is not subject to local income tax. At the same time VAT of 17.5% on local purchases applies as usual, and the tax obligations in the applicant's country of tax residence do not disappear.
Can you move with your family, and what happens after 12 months?
Yes, a family package is available (a fee of $3,000 instead of $2,000, with the same overall income threshold of $50,000/year for the group). The visa is issued for 12 months and renewed annually on a fresh application and payment of the fee; the programme itself is periodically extended by the Cabinet (the last known extension is to 31 December 2026), so whether it is still current is worth checking before filing.
What documents are needed for family members for the Welcome Stamp family package?
A photograph and the biodata page of the passport for each family member over 18, as well as proof of the relationship or of the marriage.
Is ordinary travel insurance suitable for the Welcome Stamp?
No. A condition of approval is a medical insurance policy valid in Barbados for the whole period of stay applied for; ordinary travel insurance is not suitable for approval. The policy can be arranged either in your own country or on the ground.
