The visa in itself does not exempt you from taxes: being in the country for 184 days or more within 12 months triggers Brazilian tax residence, with an obligation to pay progressive income tax (up to 27.5%) on worldwide income. Brazil's tax system is one of the most labour-intensive in the world: according to World Bank Doing Business data, companies spend about 1,500 hours a year on paying taxes alone (5 times more than the Latin American average and 10 times more than the OECD average), so the visa status and tax residence need to be planned separately with a Brazilian accountant.

Renewable only once, 2 years maximum — there is no direct path to permanent residence

Residency is granted for up to 1 year and renewed through the Federal Police/MigranteWeb only once for the same period — 2 years maximum under this status in total. This category does not open an automatic path to permanent residency — when the period expires you have to change your visa/immigration status to another basis (a work visa, an investor visa, family reunification and so on).

There is no single tariff — the consular fee depends on the consulate and the applicant's citizenship: for example, $290 in New York, €100 in Helsinki and around RUB 11,000 when filing in Moscow. Can you work in Brazil on the digital nomad visa?
No. VITEM XIV expressly prohibits an employment relationship with Brazilian employers or providing services to Brazilian companies — only remote work for a foreign employer or foreign clients is allowed.

How long does obtaining the visa for Brazil realistically take?
The only officially confirmed figure is an internal standard of «up to 5 working days» to process a fully assembled package — there is no single government timeline «from filing to visa in hand». Secondary sources differ: from 3–12 weeks at some immigration firms to «up to 180 days» at others — allow spare time and check with the consulate you are filing with.
Do you have to register in Brazil after entering on the visa?
Yes, with the Federal Police — but the exact deadline differs between consulates: the embassies in Lisbon and Helsinki state 90 days after entry, the embassy in Moscow 30 days. The discrepancy is confirmed directly on the official pages, and the current deadline is worth checking with the specific consulate when filing.
