The income threshold rose on 1 April 2024 — by almost 30%

It was €2,700 a month (€32,400 a year); it became €3,500 a month (€42,000 a year) for every application filed from 1 April 2024. Those who applied before that date keep the old threshold on renewal. In addition, income has to be proven 5 months ahead (the equivalent of €17,500) — this is not a one-off certificate but a mandatory condition both on first filing and on renewal. As at July 2026 no further increases to the threshold have been recorded.

A maximum of 4 years in total, after that either a new ground or leaving

The permit is issued for 1 year and renewed no more than 3 times (4 years in total) at the discretion of Residency Malta Agency — at each renewal compliance with the criteria is checked again, including income and a minimum of 5 cumulative months of residence in Malta over the previous 12 months, evidenced by bank statements. The renewal has to be filed 2–3 months before the current period expires. Originally (from 2021) no more than 2 renewals were allowed (3 years in total) — the rule was extended to 3 renewals (4 years) later.

Frequently asked questions

What minimum income is needed for the Nomad Residence Permit in Malta?
From €3,500 a month (€42,000 a year) for applications from 1 April 2024 — plus you have to prove income for 5 months ahead from the date of filing (€17,500) through bank statements for the last 3 months and a contract or agreement covering the remaining period. Applications filed before 1 April 2024 keep the previous threshold of €2,700 a month.
Do Nomad Residence Permit holders pay tax in Malta?
Under the S.L. 123.210 rules and the MTCA guidelines of 16 January 2026, income from authorised remote work is not taxed for the first 12 months, after which a flat rate of 10% applies (instead of the progressive rates of up to 35%). That said, obtaining the permit does not in itself guarantee being recognised as a Maltese tax resident — that is a separate question worth checking case by case, taking into account tax residency in the country of citizenship or previous residence.
Can you bring your family on this visa?
Yes — a spouse or partner, minor children and certain categories of adult dependent children can be included in the application, but the requirements for proven income and documents grow in proportion to the number of dependants, and family members usually cannot be added once approval has been given (newborns aside).
How long does the process take?
Officially Residency Malta Agency states a processing time for the application itself — 30 working days from receipt of the fee payment (the visa aside). After that, if your citizenship requires an entry visa, obtaining it is added on (from a week to 6–8 weeks), and the residence card is issued a further 3–4 weeks after biometrics are given — so the whole path “from filing to card in hand” is more realistically 1.5–5 months depending on citizenship.
How much are the official government fees (excluding our support)?
Two compulsory official payments per person: €300 for processing the application (non-refundable, by bank transfer to the Residency Malta Agency account) and €100 for issuing the residence card (paid by card in person at the Identità office, cash is not accepted). If your citizenship requires an entry visa, visa fees are added separately.
Is the other parent's separate consent needed to include a child in the application?
Yes, if the applicant does not have sole custody — written consent from the other parent or guardian, drawn up in advance, is required for the child.
