M business visa in China
The M commercial visa is China's visa for those travelling to the country on business and trade matters: negotiations, trade fairs and other commercial events with a Chinese partner. The visa confers no right to work under employment and does not convert into a residence permit — you enter for its term and travel back.
Which invitation supports an M visa
The official rules require one of three grounds plus the common package of documents — passport and application form.
Invitation from a trade partner
- Documents on the commercial activity issued by a trade partner in China
Invitation to take part in a trade fair
- Written invitation to the trade fair issued by the organiser in China
Invitation from an organisation or an individual
- Invitation with details of the guest, the visit and the inviting party
- Copy of the inviting organisation's licence for commercial activity
- Official identity card of the person invited
- The copy of the licence and the identity card may be omitted if the invitation is issued on a PU form
When the M visa will not suit
A business trip to China of no more than 30 days on an ordinary Russian international passport
No visa is needed at all — until 31 December 2027 a visa-free regime applies to Russian nationals and it covers business trips
You are travelling to China to work under employment with a Chinese employer
Work Visa (Z Visa) with a work permit — without them, employment in China counts as illegal
You are travelling for an exchange, a visit or another non-commercial event rather than on commercial business
The F visa — for exchanges, visits and other non-commercial activity
Documents to gather
The official list from the rules of the Chinese embassy in Russia; the exact composition depends on who issued the invitation and how.
- One of three grounds: documents on the commercial activity from a trade partner, a letter of invitation to a trade fair, or an invitation from an organisation or an individual
- Copy of the inviting organisation's licence for commercial activity — not required if the invitation is issued on a PU form
- Official identity card of the person invited — not required if the invitation is issued on a PU form
- Passport valid for 6 months or more on the date of application, with a blank page for the visa
- Completed and printed application form — filled in online at bio.visaforchina.cn
How the process runs
The general procedure for filing an M visa application is the same as for the other categories; only the materials on the commercial activity differ.
- 1
The inviting party in China prepares the invitation
The trade partner, trade fair organiser or other inviting organisation or individual prepares the invitation: details of the guest, the purpose of the visit, the dates of arrival and departure, the places to be visited, the connection with the inviting party and who is paying for the trip.
- 2
Online submission of the application form and documents
The applicant completes the form at bio.visaforchina.cn and uploads the invitation and other materials for preliminary checking.
- 3
Submitting the original passport at the visa office
When the application status changes to "passport to be submitted", the applicant or their representative brings the original passport and the printed application form with the barcode to the visa office during opening hours.
- 4
Receiving the visa
4 working days under the standard tariff, 3 working days under the express oneThe period is counted from the day the passport is lodged. The Chinese embassy in the USA processes an M visa application in 4 working days under the standard tariff and in 3 under the express one; timelines may differ at other consulates, including the embassy in Russia.
Timelines and rights
Work
The M visa confers no right to work under employment. Work without a work permit and a work residence permit counts as illegal employment.
Trips, renewal and the grace period
No residence permit is obtained on an M visa: the period of stay is stated in the visa. Accommodation is registered with the police within 24 hours of check-in; in a hotel this is done by the hotel.
No separate residence permit is obtained on an M visa: the permitted period of stay is stated in the visa itself. The validity of the visa, the length of stay and the number of entries are determined individually by consular officers on the basis of the applicant's circumstances.
How it differs from the routes next to it
