Who can obtain an R visa

The R visa is issued on a single ground — talent status recognised by the state.

How the process runs

The R visa allows entry; the residence permit is obtained separately after arrival in China.

    Preparing the documents and the application

    The online visa application form is completed and accompanied by the passport, a photograph, proof of lawful stay or residence and materials confirming the status of a high-level talent or urgently needed specialist under the criteria of the competent Chinese authorities.

    Filing the application with a Chinese embassy or consulate

    The application is filed with the Chinese diplomatic mission covering the applicant's actual place of stay, together with the previous Chinese passport or previous Chinese visa, if any.

    Receiving the R visa

    Once the documents have been checked, the consulate issues a category R visa.

    Obtaining the residence permit after entry

    within 30 days of entry

    If the visa is marked as requiring a residence permit, the application is filed with the foreigners affairs department of the police at the intended place of residence. For applicants with the status of a high-level talent or urgently needed specialist, the documents may be filed by the inviting organisation or individual, by relatives or by a specialised service organisation.

    Receiving the residence permit

    The police examine the documents and decide on issuance within the validity of the receipt of acceptance — no more than 15 working days. High-level foreign talents, urgently needed specialists and investors may be granted a residence permit valid for up to 5 years.

An extension of the residence permit is applied for under the same rules as the first issue: the applicant submits supporting materials for the ground of stay, and the police may extend the term or replace the document. For high-level foreign talents, urgently needed specialists and investors, the extended residence permit may likewise be issued for up to 5 years.
