Long-stay Study Visa (X1 Visa)

Official wording: issued to those who intend to study in China for more than 180 days. After entering on an X1 visa you must, within the period set by law (30 days from the date of entry), obtain a study-type residence permit from the exit and entry administration authorities.

Short-stay Study Visa (X2 Visa)

Official wording: issued to those who intend to study in China for no more than 180 days.

Long-stay Family Reunion Visa (Q1 Visa)

Official wording: issued to family members of Chinese citizens or of foreign nationals with permanent residence in China who intend to enter for family reunion, and also to those entering for the purpose of foster care of a child. The intended period of stay exceeds 180 days. After entering on a Q1 visa you must, within the prescribed period (30 days from the date of entry), obtain a family reunion residence permit.

Short-stay Family Visit Visa (Q2 Visa)

Official wording: issued to those who intend to visit relatives who are Chinese citizens residing in China or foreign nationals with permanent residence in China. The intended period of stay is no more than 180 days.

Long-stay Visa to Visit a Foreign National Working or Studying in China (S1 Visa)

Official wording: issued to those who intend to enter China to visit foreign nationals working or studying in China and who are their spouse, parent, son or daughter under 18 or parent-in-law, and also to those entering on other private affairs. The intended period of stay exceeds 180 days. After entering on an S1 visa you must, within the prescribed period (30 days from the date of entry), obtain a residence permit for private affairs or reunion.

Short-stay Visa to Visit a Foreign National Working or Studying in China (S2 Visa)

Official wording: issued to those who intend to visit family members who are foreign nationals working or studying in China, or to those entering on other private affairs. The intended period of stay is no more than 180 days.

Commercial Visa (M Visa)

Official wording: issued to those who intend to enter China for commercial and trade activities.

Work-type Residence Permit for Foreigners

Employment in China. Obtained after entry on a work visa on the basis of a work permit.

Reunion-type Residence Permit for Foreigners

Residence in China to reunite with family members who are Chinese citizens or foreign nationals with permanent residence in China, and also for the purposes of foster care.

Study-type Residence Permit for Foreigners

Study at an educational institution in China. Obtained after entry on an X1 visa.
