S2 visa for China in China
A short-stay family visa for those travelling to visit a spouse, parent, child or other close relative who is a foreign national working or studying in China. It also suits other private trips unconnected with the applicant's own employment or study.
Who can obtain an S2 visa
The official definition of family members for this visa is wider than usual — it covers more than the spouse and children.
Officially recognised family members
- Spouse
- Parents
- Son, daughter
- Spouse of a son or daughter
- Brother, sister
- Grandfather, grandmother
- Grandson, granddaughter
- Parent-in-law (father-in-law, mother-in-law)
Another ground
- Other private affairs unconnected with visiting a relative — an S2 visa is issued for these as well
- The consular officer may request additional supporting documents for the particular situation
Documents to gather
The basic document package for the S2 visa.
- Invitation from the inviting foreign national — with their details, the purpose and length of the visit and contact information
- Copy of the photograph page of the inviting party's passport
- Copy of the inviting party's residence permit or visa
- Copy of the document proving the family relationship (marriage certificate, birth certificate and the like)
- For other private affairs — additional supporting documents at the consular officer's request
How the process runs
The procedure at the Chinese embassy in the USA; in other countries the consulate sets its own details of the process and its own timelines.
- 1
Complete the application form and upload the documents online
The invitation, copies of the inviting party's passport and residence permit (or visa) and the document proving the family relationship are uploaded into the online visa application system.
- 2
Submit the original passport in person
When the application status changes to "passport to be submitted", the applicant or their representative brings the original passport and the printed application form with the barcode to the visa office during opening hours.
- 3
Collect the visa
4 working days (standard service) or 3 working days (express)The period is counted from the day the passport is lodged. When the application status changes to "passport ready for collection", the visa can be collected at the visa office.

Trips, renewal and the grace period
No residence permit is obtained: the period of stay is stated in the visa. Accommodation is registered with the police within 24 hours of check-in; in a hotel this is done by the hotel.
A stay on an S2 visa cannot be extended after entry: the period of stay is set in the visa itself and no separate residence permit is issued on this ground. To stay longer with the same foreign national you need a different visa — the long-stay S1: under it, a residence permit for private affairs is applied for within 30 days of entry.
How it differs from the routes next to it

What comes next: permanent residence and citizenship
Route to permanent residence
Short private trips do not lead to permanent residence. Permanent residence is granted for investment, for 4 years of work in a management or associate professor position together with 3 years of residence in China, or for an outstanding contribution.
Route to citizenship
China does not recognise dual citizenship. Citizenship is granted to close relatives of Chinese citizens, to those who have settled in China and on other lawful grounds. If approved, you lose your foreign citizenship.
