Short-stay study visa in China

A visa for short-term study in China — for foreign nationals admitted by a Chinese school, language courses or another educational institution to a short educational programme rather than to a multi-year degree course.

Who can obtain an X2 visa

The visa is obtained either in advance through a consulate abroad or — if the applicant is already in China on another visa — by changing status on the spot.

Standard application — through a consulate

  • Travelling to study in China for no more than 180 days: a short educational programme, courses or an internship at an educational institution
  • An admission notice from a school or another organisation in China is required
  • Where necessary — the information form for foreign students on a short-term visit (form DQ)

Change of status — already in China

  • The applicant is already in China on another visa and wishes to change it to an X2
  • They submit an official letter and a certificate of enrolment from a Chinese educational or training institution to the exit and entry department of the public security authorities
  • A visa may be issued with zero, one or two entries, valid for no more than 1 year and with a period of stay of no more than 180 days

When the X2 visa will not suit

Travelling to study in China for more than 180 days

Long-stay Study Visa (X1 Visa)

Travelling to visit relatives who are Chinese citizens or foreign nationals with permanent residence in China

Short-stay Family Visit Visa (Q2 Visa)

Travelling on commercial and trade business rather than to study

Commercial Visa (M Visa)

Documents to gather

The list is for applications made through a consulate abroad; when changing status inside China the set of documents differs (see the section "Who can obtain").

  • Valid passport
  • Admission Notice issued by a school or another organisation in China
  • Information form for foreign students on a short-term visit (form DQ) — where the receiving party requires it
  • Application form and materials completed and uploaded through the China Online Visa Application (COVA) system

How the process runs

The process runs through the consular section of a Chinese embassy or consulate abroad; the X2 visa itself does not confer a residence permit.

  1. 1

Obtain an admission notice from the receiving party

The school, language courses or other organisation in China admitting the applicant to a programme of no more than 180 days sends an Admission Notice; separately, an information form for foreign students on a short-term visit (form DQ) may be required.

  2. 2

File the application through the COVA system

The form is completed and the documents uploaded in the consular section's China Online Visa Application (COVA) system; the original documents and the passport are then submitted in person at the visa office.

  3. 3

    Receive the visa

Processing time depends on the particular consulate. The Chinese embassy in the USA issues the X2 visa in 4 working days under the standard tariff and in 3 working days under the express one; the count starts from the date the passport is lodged.

Timelines and rights

Work

Work is not allowed. A foreign national may work in China only with a work permit and a work residence permit; otherwise the employment is treated as illegal.

Trips, renewal and the grace period

No residence permit is obtained under the X2: the period of stay is stated in the visa itself and does not exceed 180 days. Accommodation is registered with the police within 24 hours of check-in; in a hotel this is done by the hotel.

While in China, a stay on an X2 visa may be extended at the exit and entry department of the public security authorities no later than 7 days before the period stated in the visa expires, with a study certificate from a Chinese educational or training institution attached. The extension may not exceed 180 days, and the total period of stay may not exceed the period originally stated in the visa.

What comes next: permanent residence and citizenship

Route to permanent residence

Short-term study does not lead to permanent residence. Permanent residence is granted for investment, for 4 years of work in a management or associate professor position together with 3 years of residence in China, or for an outstanding contribution.

Route to citizenship

China does not recognise dual citizenship. Citizenship is granted to close relatives of Chinese citizens, to those who have settled in China and on other lawful grounds. If approved, you lose your foreign citizenship.

Frequently asked questions about Short-stay study visa

Who can obtain an X2 visa?
The X2 visa is issued to those travelling to study in China for no more than 180 days — for example, on a short educational programme, language courses or an internship at an educational institution. An Admission Notice from a Chinese school or another receiving organisation is required.
Which documents are required for an X2 visa?
An Admission Notice issued by a school or another organisation in China and, where the receiving party requires it, the information form for foreign students on a short-term visit (form DQ).
How long does it take to obtain an X2 visa?
Timelines depend on the particular consulate. The Chinese embassy in the USA issues the visa in 4 working days under the standard tariff and in 3 working days under the express one, counted from the date the passport is lodged.
Can a stay on an X2 visa be extended while already in China?
Yes. The application is filed with the exit and entry department of the public security authorities no later than 7 days before the period stated in the visa expires, with a study certificate from a Chinese educational or training institution attached. The extension may not exceed 180 days, and the total period of stay may not exceed the period originally stated in the visa.
Is a residence permit required on an X2 visa?
No. The visas that require a residence permit after entry are the Z work visa, the X1 study visa, the J1 journalist visa and the Q1 and S1 family visas. The X2 is not on that list: the permitted period of stay is stated in the visa itself and no separate residence permit is obtained.
Is part-time work allowed on an X2 visa?
The X2 visa in itself confers no right to work and no residence permit. Part-time work and off-campus internships with the consent of the educational institution can be arranged only by holders of a study residence permit — that is, holders of the long-stay X1 visa — and even then a separate endorsement in the residence permit is required.
How does the X2 visa differ from the X1 visa?
Both visas are issued for study in China; the difference is the period: the X1 is intended for those studying for more than 180 days and the X2 for those studying for no more than 180 days.
