Digital nomad visa in Montenegro
A temporary residence permit for foreign nationals who work remotely for a foreign company or for their own business registered outside Montenegro. The status is designed for IT specialists, freelancers and employees working remotely. The applicant confirms a source of income abroad, does not register a business in the country and does not hire staff. The nomad applies in person to the Ministry of the Interior office for the place of residence, which also takes the decision.

Who the digital nomad status suits
The status is designed for two types of remote earnings — employment with a foreign company and your own business or freelance work outside Montenegro. The set of documents is almost the same; only the way income is proved differs.
An employee of a foreign company
- Works under an employment contract with an employer registered outside Montenegro
- Confirms the employment with an employment contract or another document from the employer
- Does not register a sole tradership or a company in Montenegro and does not join the staff of a local firm
A freelancer or the owner of a business abroad
- Works under contracts and invoices with foreign clients rather than as an employee
- Confirms the income with account statements, invoices or contracts with clients
- The applicant's company is registered outside Montenegro — you may be its founder, but you may not carry out its activity in the country
When the programme is not a fit
I want to take a job with a Montenegrin employer
you need a residence permit with a work permit for a local company — the digital nomad status is not suitable for that, as it requires a foreign employer
I want to register a company in Montenegro and run a business locally
a residence permit on the ground of starting and running a business in Montenegro is the fit, not the digital nomad status
I plan to be in the country as a tourist without arranging residence
no status needs to be arranged — entry within the visa-free period is enough
I want to obtain permanent residence or citizenship straight away
the digital nomad status is temporary and gives no separate fast track either to permanent residence or to citizenship — you will have to go through the ordinary procedure at the Ministry of the Interior
Documents to gather
The full list of supporting documents for filing the application at the Ministry of the Interior.
- A valid passport or identity document valid for at least 3 months longer than the period of stay requested

- Proof of accommodation on the territory of Montenegro
- A health insurance policy
- An employment contract or another document confirming remote electronic work for a foreign company or for your own business not registered in Montenegro
- A photograph, two fingerprints and a digitised signature — taken at the moment the application is filed
How the process runs
The application is filed in person; there is no remote or embassy filing for this status.
- 1
Entry into Montenegro under the visa-free regime
up to 90 daysThe applicant enters the country without a visa (for citizens of most countries) and may stay during that period in order to file the application locally.
- 2
Filing the application at the Ministry of the Interior for the place of residence
The applicant attends the regional office of the Ministry of the Interior in person, completes the prescribed form (Annex 3), which is printed in Montenegrin and English, and gives a photograph, two fingerprints and a digital signature.
- 3
Consideration of the application and the documents
up to 40 daysUntil the decision is issued, an applicant who filed the application before the end of the 90-day visa-free period may remain in Montenegro.
- 4
Issue of the digital nomad temporary residence permit
If the decision is positive, the applicant receives a temporary residence permit for a term of up to two years.
Who you can bring with you
Close family members join the digital nomad under the family reunification programme once the main applicant has obtained the status.
A spouse
Minor children born in and outside marriage
Children of one of the spouses and adopted children
Trips, renewal and the grace period
The right to live in the country for the whole term of the permit (up to 2 years)
The permit is renewed for a further period of up to two years — that is, up to four years of continuous status in total. The renewal application is filed in person at the Ministry of the Interior office for the place of residence no later than 30 days before the current permit expires. If that deadline is missed and the permit has already expired, a new application for digital nomad status may be filed no earlier than 6 months after the date the previous permit expired.
