Who you can bring with you

The family members of a foreign pupil may accompany them to Indonesia provided certain conditions are met.

Parents and legal guardians
May come with the pupil provided they hold a valid passport and meet the Indonesian immigration regulations. They need a separate visa, usually a tourist visa (B211A) or a visa for family members
The spouse of a foreign pupil (if of age)
May accompany them with a marriage certificate and a valid passport. A separate visa is required, depending on the purpose of the stay
Children who are not of age
May come with the pupil, but each child must have a valid passport and their own permission to stay, or be named as a dependant in the guardian's documents

Trips, renewal and the grace period

The permission is granted for 1 or 2 years from the day of entry. It is extended online through evisa.imigrasi.go.id.

The residence permission (ITAS) is extended online through the portal evisa.imigrasi.go.id, with no physical visit to a consulate. The procedure may be started several months before the current permission expires. The visa is valid for 90 days from the date of issue; the permission to stay is granted for the period chosen (1 or 2 years) from the date of actual entry into Indonesia.

What comes next: permanent residence and citizenship

Route to permanent residence

Students are not on the list of those whose ITAS is changed to a permanent ITAP: that list covers clergy, workers, investors, elderly tourists, spouses and children of citizens, and former Indonesian citizens. For permanent residence the basis of stay has to be changed.

Route to citizenship

The citizenship application is filed after living in Indonesia for 5 consecutive years or 10 years with breaks.

Frequently asked questions about Student visa

Can you work on the E30A?
No, working is prohibited. The visa is intended solely for study. Any employment that does not match the purpose of the stay breaches the terms of the visa and may lead to its cancellation.
Which visa is appropriate for higher education?
For study at universities and colleges there is a separate category, E30B (Visa Pelajar). The E30A is intended only for secondary education and below (primary and secondary school).
How long does the application take to process?
The visa is processed within five working days after Immigration receives the payment in full. The time may be counted from the moment the funds arrive, so it is advisable to check the timings in advance with the sponsor and the immigration authorities.
What is the minimum sum for confirming finances?
Confirmation of at least USD 2,000 (or the equivalent in another currency) is required. This may be a bank statement for the last 3 months in the name of the pupil or the sponsor showing steady funds in the account.
Is a sponsor required, and who can be one?
Yes, a sponsor is compulsory. The sponsor may be the educational institution (the school) where the foreign national will study, or an individual (a parent, a guardian, a third party). The sponsor creates an account on the portal evisa.imigrasi.go.id and is responsible for filing all the documents and paying the charges.
Can permanent residence (ITAP) be obtained with an E30A?
The E30A is a temporary visa for 1–2 years. Permanent residence requires changing the basis of stay to one of the other visa categories (for example, a work visa or marriage) and meeting the ITAP requirements — usually 3 or more years of continuous residence in Indonesia or marriage to an Indonesian citizen for 2 years or more.
