Family visa for a spouse in Indonesia (Bali)
The visa is intended for foreign nationals married to Indonesian citizens. It allows them to live in the country for the period chosen and to leave and enter freely as needed. The application is filed by the Indonesian spouse through the online portal. The marriage has to be confirmed by an official certificate, translated into Indonesian by a sworn translator if the certificate was issued abroad.

Who this visa suits
The E31A visa suits people married to Indonesian citizens who wish to live in the country. The main criterion is holding an official marriage certificate.

- Bank funds of at least USD 2,000 (or the equivalent)
- Documents on income or savings for the last 3 months

Documents to gather
All documents are filed electronically (PDF or JPEG) through the portal evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Originals may be requested where further verification is needed.
- A valid passport (at least 6 months of validity beyond the end of the visa)
- A letter requesting the visa from the Indonesian spouse
- A marriage certificate registered in Indonesia, or a certified translation of a foreign certificate into Indonesian (exception: if the original is in English, a translation may not be required)
- A bank statement for the last 3 months confirming at least USD 2,000
- A colour photograph (meeting the biometric standards)
- A CV for the foreign national
- Information on the travel itinerary or a plan for the stay
How the process runs
The E31A visa application is filed through the online portal. The sponsor (the Indonesian spouse) has to create an account in the evisa.imigrasi.go.id system beforehand.

The sponsor registers on the portal
1–2 hoursThe Indonesian spouse registers an account at evisa.imigrasi.go.id using their passport details and contact information. This has to be done before the application is filed.

Preparing and uploading the documents
1–2 daysThe foreign national collects all the required documents in electronic form (PDF, JPEG). The sponsoring spouse uploads the documents into the system through their account on the portal.

Checking that the documents are complete
1–2 working daysThe immigration authority checks that all the required documents have been uploaded and are in proper order. If the documents are incomplete, the missing ones may be added.

Paying the visa fee
a few hoursThe sponsor pays the visa fee through the portal. Once the payment is confirmed the five working days of processing time start to run.

Processing and verification
5 working daysThe immigration service checks the documents and verifies the data on the marriage and the financial position.

Issue of the visa
a few hoursAfter approval the visa is issued electronically. The foreign national may print the visa and present it on entry into Indonesia.

Entry into Indonesia and activation of the permission
on arrivalOn entry into the country the passport is stamped and the residence permission chosen (1 or 2 years from the date of arrival) is activated.

Working on this visa is not allowed: any occupation that does not match the permission to stay, and the sale of goods or services, are prohibited.

Trips, renewal and the grace period
The permission is granted for 1 or 2 years from the day of entry and extended online. To move to permanent residence the marriage has to have lasted 2 years or more.
The residence permission (ITAS) may be extended online through the portal evisa.imigrasi.go.id without having to re-enter the country. The extension process runs in the same way as the initial filing, with updated documents on the financial position and the other materials required.
What comes next: permanent residence and citizenship
Route to permanent residence
Through ITAP. The ITAS of the spouse of an Indonesian citizen is changed to a permanent ITAP once the marriage has lasted 2 years or more.
Route to citizenship
The citizenship application is filed after living in Indonesia for 5 consecutive years or 10 years with breaks.
